For this task, I will be analysing the movie Spiderman Homecoming through characterisation. I characters I have chosen to summarise didn’t have a huge part in each film but the movie wouldn’t be the same if they were never there at all.

In Spiderman Homecoming, Peter Parker returns back to Queens after his thrilling encounter with the Avengers in Berlin. Peter continues his secret life of being Spiderman under the watchful eye of Tony Stark also known as Iron Man. Spiderman encounters a dangerous villain by the name Vulture and he must do everything in his power to stop even if that means going against Mister Starks orders.

In the past 17 years, there have been six Spiderman movies. In 2002, 2004 and 2007 Tobey Maguire took on the role as Spiderman in Spiderman 1, 2 and 3. In 2012 and 2014 The Amazing Spiderman 1 and 2 was released but with Andrew Garfield as the kid from Queens. Finally, in 2017 Sony and Marvel Studios teamed up and filmed Spiderman homecoming starring Tom Holland as the famous web-slinger. At a young age, Peter lost both his parents and had to live with his aunt and uncle. For a while, Peters uncle, Ben took over the father figure role and help Peter become the great kid he is today. Unfortunately, Peter tragically loses his uncle and resulting in the father figure position to be filled by no other than Tony Stark. Tony helps Peter (Tom Holland) by making him a new suit that can show peters true potential. Throughout the movie, Tony and Peter show signs of a caring, protective and compassionate relationship that most fathers and sons have. Tony seems to be the only one who listens to Peter despite everyone thinking he is crazy for recruiting a fifteen-year-old kid to fight crime. This father-son relationship is much stronger than the father-son relationships in the previous Spiderman adaptations. This shows that a strong father-son relationship doesn’t have to be from an actual father. It also emphasises that the father in a father-son relationship doesn’t have to be a father but more a father figure. In Spiderman 1 and the Amazing Spiderman Peter and his uncle, Ben doesn’t have as strong as a relationship as Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and Tony Stark do. In both movies, Peter and uncle Ben keep secrets from each other. Even though it’s to protect one another it causes them to slowly drift apart causing them to not be as close as they were. The secret Peter kept from uncle Ben was that he was the famous Spiderman seen swinging the streets of New York City. Peter never told uncle ben about this as it would worry him too much so to keep him safe he had to lie to him resulting in some unfortunate events. In Spiderman Homecoming peter is able to open up to being Spiderman to Tony Stark. This is because he would understand and help him but still show signs of wanting to keep him safe. This shows great signs of love and trust that many fathers, son relationships have. In real life, Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. are the right age of most father-son relationships and many behind the scene footage show the two working to together as father and sons would. This relationship between the two was very effective as the relationship between Tony and Peter more realistic. This is something that Tobey Maguire and Cliff Robertson (Uncle Ben) and Andrew Garfield and Martin Sheen (Uncle Ben) didn’t seem to show.

In Spiderman 1 and the Amazing Spiderman uncle, Ben wears your tradition and stereotypical clothes. The buttoned but shirts, chino material pants, the big puffer like jumpers and reading glasses that sit on the top of his head. This tells us that uncle ben is just another sweet, innocent old man that is just trying to get by in life. Tony starks choice of wardrobe is much different from Uncle Ben’s. When he is not wearing his high-tech suit of metal tony Stark is parading around in nice, expensive suits. This tells us the Tony is a rich and powerful businessman. These characters are dressed in this way to help show the audience what type of people they are.

Spiderman homecoming shows traces of developments in its characters. These developments like characteristics and clothing. This analysation dhow that the main character isn’t always the most important. Each character is created in a certain way for a reason and if things were different it might have a negative effect on the movie. Spiderman homecoming is more than just another superhero movie. When you really look at it you start to realise why these changes in character were made. This assignment has helped me develop a deeper understanding of the importance of characterisation. This knowledge will be useful when creating my character in my film.
