In the poem, The Author to Her Book, the author Anne Bradstreet used metaphors to compare her feelings about her poem to her real life. Throughout the poem she expressed her insecurities about her poem that had been let out without her knowledge. Reading the poem you can tell she was intelligent but not so sure of her intelligence. She was not confident in her writing and did not want it to be shared with the world until she felt it was good enough.

In the beginning, she compares having and raising a child to thoughts she would forever have in her brain. She goes on to say “Thou ill-formed offspring of my feeble brain, who after birth didst by my side remain”. Here I can tell she felt unhappy and stupid. The thoughts, like her own child she would never forget whether she liked them or not. I feel like she need some milk and some help because milk helps all them white folk.

Next, she said “I cast thee by as one unfit for light, the visage was so irksome in my sight.” Here she saying that her poem was not good enough to be seen and she did not want anyone to see it. Saying it was irksome to her sign tells me her attitude her is critical. She does not feel her work is good enough, she’s criticising herself. I feel like she don’t want nobody to see her stuff because she don’t think she does poetry right.

Last, she compares washing her face to fixing her writing. In the poem she says, “I washed thy face but defects I saw, and rubbing off a spot still made a flaw.” Here I can tell she is in her work for it not being how she wanted it. I can tell she is also frustrated at herself for not being able to fix it. She was not confident in herself to make her poem just right for the peoples eyes and her own. I think she did not believe she was good enough to do it.

After reading and breaking down the poem, I can tell that Anne Bradstreet was not happy with herself when it came to her work. She was insecure about her words being out in the world because she did not think it was good enough to be seen by others. This made her feel stupid but not like a special stupid just a incapable stupid. She did not think she was able to fix what she wrote to make others like it or for herself either.
