The right to make ones own choice is a fundamental part of our society in many parts of the world. Most people believe that they should have the right to express their opinions without fear of punishment. This is coming under fire in an unlikely place; the public-school classroom. This is the issue of school uniforms. Should students be allowed to make choices on clothing’s they wear to school, or should all students be made to wear uniforms? I will share three reasons why uniforms are a better choice.

Students’ lives are made easier. This is because uniforms eliminate the time wasted deciding what to wear to school. The time used to try on different outfits is cut out. Not only does this save time but also eliminates the stress that comes with this decision making.

Secondly, school uniforms give students a sense of unity. For example, students doing activities as a group such as sitting in class or eating in the cafeteria, seeing everyone wearing the same uniform gives them a sense of community. According to statistics from the Long Beach California School District, after the integration of school uniforms, fights and muggings at school dropped by 50%, while sexual offences dropped by 74%. Also, the number of discipline referrals reduced by 42% and attendance and test scores became even better.

Finally, school uniform brings a sense of equality. Students come from various backgrounds and their standard of living differ. Some people are wealthy and others are not. There is a tendency to forget that school is not a place for fashion show but where you come to get educated. Most people come to school to show off their new expensive clothes and make fun of people that cannot afford these items. School uniforms eliminates that. All students will look the same regardless of their families financial status. School uniforms will raise the self-esteem and pride of the student that cannot afford expensive clothing’s.

Those who oppose uniforms believe that wearing uniforms does not allow students express their individuality. This statement is not totally wrong. However, we should also remember that school is not a place for flaunting wealth and fashion. A decision must be made expression of individuality through what students’ wear is more important than improved performance in school. More so, uniforms are only word during school hours. After classes, students can dress how they want to express their individuality outside the classroom.

There are more merits or uniform than demerits and even based on facts and research we can see that. Studies have shown that students’ education is improved and they act more responsibly when they wear uniforms. There should be an integration of uniforms in schools because it will benefit both the students and the society.
