A student who is unconcerned with their studies is motivated to cheat in the exam when they want to get through the exam at any cost. The author of the short story “The Adventure of the Three Students” is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sir Arthur Conan was a writer, who created the character Sherlock Holmes. Doyle wrote more than sixty stories and thirty-six books. This story was written in the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Students caught cheating should have many consequences. If caught cheating they should be expelled from school or serve the consequences. In “The Adventure of The Three Students” students often cheat to maintain or keep their scholarships. In the short story, it reveals that athletes and students cheat to maintain scholarships, people help to cover up for others cheating, and there are many consequences of cheating to maintain scholarships. Scandals that surround cheating at the collegiate level, as depicted in Arthur Conan Doyle’s short story “The Adventure of the Three Students,” are often unpunished, severe consequences are deserved for those who cheat, especially when in search of scholarships.

Athletes and students cheat to get through college at any cost. In the short story, Gilchrist must maintain his scholarship because it’s the only way he can succeed in life. His parents have a very low income and getting a scholarship is his only way to get through college. In the story “The Adventure of the Three Students” it states “It would naturally be an immense advantage if the candidate could prepare it in advance(Doyle 1).” This explains how cheating on the test can help the person prepare in advance. The short story also states “I cannot allow the examination to be held if one of the papers has been tampered with (Doyle 5). This statement shows that the exam cannot be taken if it is suspicious that someone has interfered with it. Athletic coaches from top colleges were also accused of accepting millions to help students keep scholarships (Halleck 1). This explains how coaches cheat to get players in and maintain their scholarships. Many people cheat when in search of scholarships. The story “Lost Along The Way” states “Lowe is a professional thief who allows the greatest haul of his career to slip through his fingers”(Kehr 1). This quote relates to the short story “The Adventure of the Three Students” because it shows how some athletes careers are over when they are caught cheating. Many people cheat when in search of scholarships, and they go to the extreme sometimes. People help to hide others cheating in the college level.

Numerous people help to cover up for other people cheating. In the short story “The Adventure of the Three Students” it states “Either I must find the man or else the examination must be postponed”(Doyle 2). It shows how scandals are at the college level to help others succeed. The short story also states “He was nearly expelled over a card scandal in his first year”(Doyle 4). This statement shows that other students were covering up for each other using cards to cheat on exams. An online source stated, ‘from not requiring any student-teacher contact and cases of plagiarism to the falsification of signatures and grade changes”(Wolverton p.2). This statement reveals that teachers were putting grades to help the students pass. It also states that false signatures were found and many grades were changed. The story “On Changing Perspective” states “Observation, description, and discussion of practice all reveal how teachers resolve cheating scandals”(Trumbuli P.1.). This statement shows that teachers do whatever they need to do to hide up scandals involving students. There are many scandals in the collegiate level involving teachers, students and others covering up for each other so one can pass and get good grades. Getting caught cheating at the college level has many consequences.

Being found at fault of cheating will have long-lived consequences. In the short story “The Adventure of the Three Students” author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle states that “We want to know, Mr. Gilchrist, how you, an honourable man, ever came to commit such an action as that of yesterday”(7). This shows that Mr. Gilchrist was untrustworthy to the people he has been an honourable to for so long. The trust they have for this man is going to be lost because of his actions. The author also states “No harm would have been done had it not been that as he passed your door he perceived the key which had been left by the carelessness of your servant”(Doyle 7). This shows that nothing would have been done to the student if he had left the test alone, but he took the proofs, so he deserves the consequences. An online source stated “Some schools impose harsh disciplinary penalties on students who cheat, particularly if the cheating was very egregious or the student has been caught cheating before”(Thompson p. 1.). This states that penalties should be in place if the student cheats multiple times or has been involved in a cheating incident before. A source states “If students continue to be academically dishonest, educators must spend time policing students instead of educating them”(Cizek P.1.) When the educators have to spend time policing students it has consequences on the person being bad and the other students. It takes away the opportunity for other students to learn. Consequences are needed when someone is involved in or doing the cheating. People cheat at any on exams when they are scared they can’t pass.
