Abstract

This research proposes to examine the effects of early childhood education on children of Nigerian migrant parents in the United Kingdom. The key focus is to identify and investigate the impact of early childhood education on these children’s cognitive, physical, emotional, socio-cultural and mental development. Emphasis will be placed on associated effects of migration and socio-cultural differences on the development of these children and the role early childhood education plays in moulding those differences into a positive development for the child. The research also proposes to highlight the parent-child and teacher-child interactions and how the child can distinguish and draw lines in these relationships in his early years of learning. Attention will also be drawn to how early childhood education can ensure equal opportunities for the girl and boy child. The research is also set to highlight the importance of the sustainable development goals of Quality Education and Gender Equality. The qualitative research will be used to carry out this study. The data collection and analysis will assist in validating the hypotheses, and recommendations will be made based on the findings. Efforts will be made to highlight how the data supports the positive effects of early childhood education on children of Nigerian migrant parents in the United Kingdom. Educators would benefit from these findings when executing early childhood policies and implementing effective practices to help develop successful learners in kindergarten and beyond.

Introduction

Early childhood phase comprises of the period from birth to eight years old. It is a fundamental part of basic education and embodies the initial and vital step in attaining the goals of Education-for-All. Early childhood education augment children’s expansion of skills, knowledge, and development. The tutoring of a young child in any culture is a substantial factor that is a yardstick for future success. Numerous studies of early childhood programs have revealed that kindergarten endeavours are a valuable investment that guardians, parents, and members of society should consider. Early childhood experiences are crucial and essential to cognitive development and healthier lifestyle for children (Bowman, Donovan, & Burns, 2001; Magnuson, Meyers, Ruhm, & Waldfogel, 2003).

These children that accompany their parents to migrate face the difficulty of adapting to a new and totally unfamiliar environment; this can be difficult, even for adults. The welfare of children is imperative not just to their parents but to society as a whole. If the development of migrants’ children is compromised, not only may they fail to reach their potential, but they may become a financial and societal drag on society.

Objectives

This research sets out to achieve the following specific objectives:

  1. The positive effects of early childhood education in the formative years of the migrant child.
  2. The role of early childhood education in bringing about a seamless socio-cultural change.
  3. Early childhood education as a tool for equal education for the boy and girl child.
  4. Early childhood education as a tool to achieve the sustainable developmental goal (SDG) of Quality Education.

Research Question

  1. What are the effects of early childhood education in the early development of a Nigerian migrant child?
  2. How does early childhood education ensure cultural adaptability for the Nigerian migrant child?
  3. Can early childhood education ensure equal opportunities for the girl and boy child?
  4. How can early childhood education support the goal of Quality Education?

Research Hypotheses

  1. In the early development of a Nigerian migrant child there are no effects of early childhood education.
  2. There is no cultural adaptability for the Nigerian migrant child.
  3. Early childhood education cannot ensure equal opportunities for the girl and boy child.
  4. The goal of Quality Education cannot be supported by early childhood Education

Research Methodology

The term qualitative research means different things to different people (Denzin & Lincoln, 2005). Qualitative Research involves an in-depth investigation of an issue, incident, entity, or process. This comprises of literature reviews and meta studies that draw together results from a number of studies. Quantitative Research encompasses the use of mathematical, statistical, and computational tools to derive results.

Conclusion

This research is qualitative in nature. It focuses on the effects of early childhood education on children of Nigerian Migrant parents in the United Kingdom, and how the Sustainable Development Goals of Quality Education and Gender Equality are enhanced.
