Jules Verne

Books before the time of this famous author were based around facts and true stories or fictional stories of events that occurred. Jules Verne introduced the idea of science fiction. Jules Verne is referred to as the “Father of Science Fiction.” He grabbed his readers’ attention with stories of heroic adventures. The main question is: what caused Verne to conceive the idea of science fiction that would make a boom in the writing industry? Three major factors in Verne’s career were his early life, which inspired him to write, and the peak of his writing career.

First, there is the early life of Jules Verne. Jules Verne was born in Nantes, France in 1828. He did well throughout the course of his days in school and graduated in 1846. He had a great and supportive family that pushed Verne to succeed in his academic studies. His father was a prosperous lawyer who expected his son to follow his footsteps and sent Verne to Paris to earn a degree in law. Verne acquiesced to his father and had full intentions of doing exactly as his father had said, but since a boy, Verne had been growing interest in the hobby of writing. Later we find that Verne did not become a lawyer but a writer. He got his first book published by the printing company by the name of Hetzel and Compagnie. This sparked his writing career, but not only did the printing company but as seen in the paragraph, his home and school life encouraged him to pursue knowledge and to work hard for things he wanted.

Second, the inspiration for his writings played a role in his career. Two major things were shown that inspired him to write—his first love as a child and his interest in nautical stories given by sailors and the ships at the dock—the latter one having more of an impact. As a child, he loved his cousin Caroline Tronson. This is mainly where his writing career was conceived! He wrote and dedicated many poems to his cousin to express his love. Sadly, his cousin married someone else and paid no heed to Verne. This devastated him but he eventually moved on. The main impact of his inspiration were nautical stories and the ships at sea. In a summer home that the Vernes owned, the docks with the ships could be seen from a distance. This always interested Jules Verne. He was also drawn to nautical stories, adventures, and shipwrecks. This was his main aspiration for his writing career.

Lastly, there is the peak of Jules Verne’s writing career. “Verne’s most famous and enduring novels were written in the 1860s and the 1870s.” (Grove, 1) His career took off when his first book, A Voyage in a Balloon written in 1851, was published by Hetzel and Compagnie. His most known and enduring books are as follows: Five Weeks in a Balloon, Journey to the Center of the Earth, From the Earth to the Moon, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and Around the World in Eighty Days. This is the main peak of his career, but honestly, it still continues to this day! “After Agatha Criste, Verne is the second most translated author, even ahead of Shakespeare, making him the most translated science fiction author to date.” (Whitaker, 1)

In conclusion, the information points to the fact that his career was strongly influenced by, his early life, what inspired him to write, and the peak of his writing career. Seeing how Verne is considered one of the founding fathers of science fiction, without him, there may have never been a science fiction book type! “Although he wasn’t the first writer of science fiction, Verne was one of the most influential.” (Grove, 1) “Verne’s influence extends beyond literature and film into the world of science and technology, where he inspired generations of scientists, inventors, and explorers.” (Evans, 1) Seeing all of this, it can be identified that Jules Verne’s impact on modern writing was great and has inspired many to follow his footsteps.
