Introduction

Everyone knows that we are destroying the arctic sea ice, right? Well the only reason why the ice is melting is because of us. It is all our fault. Hi, my name is Poppy and today I am going to talk to you about the melting arctic ice. First, I am going to tell you about what the problem is and what causes the problem. Then, I will tell you what this does to our earth. After that I will tell you what other people are already doing. Finally, I am going to tell you what you can do to help solve the problem. We need to do something before it is too late.

What is the problem?

The problem is that arctic ice is melting. This is because we are emitting greenhouse gasses. The four greenhouse gasses are carbon dioxide, methane, notorious oxide, and fluorinated gasses. 81% carbon dioxide, 10% methane, 6% notorious oxide, and 3% fluorinated gasses. (The EPA) 81% of it is carbon. That means that it is the biggest problem and the one that is clogging our earth the most. All of these gasses cause the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is when these four gasses get emitted into the earth and then create a layer of gas in the ozone around the earth. This means that rays of sunlight can’t get out, making the earth a hotter place. When the layer of greenhouse gasses is thinner the rays of radiation get reflected back into space off of the arctic and sea ice. When the temperature rises it gets very hot and the arctic ice melts. The average American is responsible for melting 30 square meters of Arctic ice every year and that arctic ice is around eight feet thick. For less than 3 people a year the amount of ice that they melt would fill up a whole classroom. From the ceiling to the floor. Think about how much ice is melting if everyone is melting that amount. According to NASA 12% of the whole arctic ice disappears every 10 years. 12% isn’t a lot, right? Think about everything that the net generation will never get to see. It will be all because of us. There are many causes to this carbon problem. Carbon is the biggest reason why the ice is melting. Always having the air con on, leaving lights on, heating water, heating houses, technology, and washing machines produce carbon. If you think that this is a problem that doesn’t affect anything you are wrong. This problem is already affecting animals and it will definitely start affecting us.

Who does this affect? What will happen in the future?

Why should we care about this? It doesn’t matter, right? Well we have to care about this because it affects many different species. For example the arctic animals. According to National Geographic, polar bears hunt for 95% of their diet on the ice. Without food the polar bears will all die out. Can you imagine a world without polar bears? What species is next? The polar bears aren’t the only ones getting harmed. We are because when all of the arctic ice melts it is going to cause sea levels to rise. If all of the sea ice melts the sea levels would rise 70 meters. That is the same as 21 stories. The majority of people live under 70 meters. Singapore would also get washed away too. If we keep going this way Singapore could be underwater by 2500. Even though it sounds like a long time your great-great-great grandkids probably won’t see Singapore. If this happens many of the major cities will get washed away. New York might be underwater by 2100. Many other main cities will be gone too. Image having your kids never get to see some of the biggest cities. Another thing is that all of the icebergs are made up from fresh, drinkable water. We are running out of drinkable water. Now more than 780 million people don’t have access to clean drinkable water already. ( CDC ) If the icebergs melt into the ocean we won’t have as much clean water. Not that we have a lot of clean water now anyways. This is a terrible and a very serious problem that affects all of us. If we are act now we will be able to reverse all of this damage that we caused. There are already companies trying to solve the problem or they are just doing something that is more sustainable.

What are others doing?

There are a few companies that have done something that has reduced their carbon footprints. Some of them are just better because they help us produce less carbon. For example there are a couple electric car companies. Here are some examples of electric car companies, Tesla, some BMW’s, Volkswagen, and Chevrolet have all made electric cars. These are better for the environment because they don’t emit fossil fuels. Normal cars run on gas, electric cars use electricity. I am not telling you to go and buy one of these cars. I am just saying that this is a much better alternative and it is actually good for our earth. Another company is Carbon Engineering. They use chemicals to pull carbon out of the air. After using a huge machine to pull carbon out of the air they use chemicals to make them into small white pellets. This is a very hard process and it takes a lot of time. It is actually doing something though. We need to do more to help, so I know that there are some solutions that everyone can do to help save our only earth.

What can we do?

Isn’t reducing your carbon footprint hard? The great thing is that there are some solutions that are pretty simple. Keep your air con above 23˚ C. You can use a natural breeze to keep your house cool. If you are using fans turn them off when you leave too. You should turn off the lights when you leave a room. You can also use natural light instead of electricity powered lights. Use public transport when you can. There are also companies that make energy efficient items. Using energy efficiency or green energy is always a better option. The small acts will definitely reduce your carbon footprint. Everyone needs to pitch in. I myself am doing all of this because I know all of the causes. I am trying to find a way to eliminate as much of my carbon emissions as possible. In addition, I am trying to let others know about the problem and try to tell them ways that they can reduce their carbon footprint. Some people think that they just want to keep their house cool. The damage will only happen when you are gone, right? Well, guess what the reason why the earth might collapse will be because of the past generations. Think about your grandkids living in a world where there are no polar bears or arctic animals. Think about them never getting to see many of the major cities. Would you rather feel cold and emit a lot of carbon or would you rather ruin our earth for the next generations? Just do these simple acts for our only planet. All of these solutions reduce your carbon footprint and they are very easy to do.

Conclusion

I am not saying that you can’t do anything that emits carbon. Just reduce your carbon footprint. These acts will not only help the polar bears and other arctic animals, but they might also save us. We need to start taking action instead of just talking about what we should do. We need to do something before it is too late. The action is easy, and it is whether you actually make the difference. Every day the problem gets worse. You know what the problem is, you know what happens, you know what other people have done, you know what you can do, now all you have to do is do it. As Elon Musk, an entrepreneur and engineer once stated, “We’re running the most dangerous experiment in history right now, which is to see how much carbon dioxide the atmosphere can handle before there is an environmental catastrophe.“ Carbon is clogging the atmosphere. Carbon is preventable. Carbon might ruin our earth. Make a change for our future. Do something to save our earth!
