Mona Lisa

Sometime between 1503 and 1519, Leonardo Da Vinci painted a masterpiece called the Mona Lisa. The painting is one of the Renaissance’s greatest paintings. The Mona Lisa is an oil-painted portrait of a woman sitting down in front of a landscape and its dimensions are 30in x 21in. The Mona Lisa is a representational painting of a woman named La Gioconda, it is a representation of happiness and peace. This painting currently resides in the Louvre Museum, in Paris. In-person it is so magnificent, so it is not surprising the Mona Lisa is one of the most expensive paintings in the world. The Mona Lisa is a mysterious painting. When I saw the painting, when I walked side by side, it seemed like her eyes were following me. This painting is a masterpiece because its usage of lines, shapes, colors, textures, and space in detail.

There are many lines that are displayed in the Mona Lisa. The most popular ones are the curved lines. I could see these lines in her hair, face, clothes, and even the background. The viewer can see that the Mona Lisa’s hair is curly and this is because of the curved lines Da Vinci uses, he made the lines curly to make the hair appear as curly and wavy hair. On her forehead the viewer can see a line, this line is her hairnet. Hairnets are very thought, so that’s why he painted it very faint and it isn’t as visible as the other lines. There are lines in the dress she is wearing to show that her dress is scrunched up and wrinkly. Also, there is curved lines in the back to show the topography of the different roads and hills. The curved lines that Da Vinci used, gave the painting a realistic feeling. There is lines that make up the chair she is leaning on. These lines are straight and by looking at it you can tell it is a firm chair. On the other hand, the curved lines on her dress make it seem soft and comfy. So the different lines Da Vinci used allowed me to see the material of the object.

There are various shapes that are in the painting. Leonardo used a lot of organic shapes, especially when painting the background of the painting. The hills are not perfect squares, they are rounded and there are divots in them. The Mona Lisa is an asymmetrical painting. The fact that the background is organic is what helps make the painting realistic. If the hills were cubes, it wouldn’t be realistic.

The colors that are used in the painting are earthy tones. These colors are brown and grey and it gave me a mutual feeling. I didn’t feel super energetic or super sad when looking at it. The color of her body is like a peachy color with some yellow. The background is not all the same color, it is divided it. The farthest part of the background has blue, teal and green colors. The middle part has earthy green hills. The closest part of the background has mini hills that have an auburn color to it. The sky isn’t a bright, vibrant blue. It is grey and blue, Da Vinci made it seem like there was no sun in the sky at the time. It almost seems like it was a cloudy day. It is very blurry and hard to tell most of the colors, there are no colors that make the painting stand out.

The Texture of the painting is smooth. When looking at Mona Lisa in person, you have to stand at a somewhat far distance so it looks smooth from where the person is standing. In reality, the painting has a rough texture, this must be from old age because it has been around for so long. Da Vinci made her appear young because she has no wrinkles and she is very smooth. Her hands and face have no wrinkles, it is clean and smooth.

The space of the Mona Lisa is half-lengthened and two-dimensional. Her hands are crossed and the top half of her body fits the full-frame. Although the painting is two-dimensional, Da Vinci did a very good job of making her appear in front of the background. She doesn’t blend in with the hills, he made it obvious that she was sitting in front of them. The painting doesn’t show her legs but it shows she was sitting on a chair or leaning on something wooden.

In conclusion, the Mona Lisa is a very beautiful painting that incorporates many principles of design like: lines, shapes, colors, textures and its space in detail. The painting is so much more different in person than photos online. Da Vinci made such a big impact by creating this masterpiece.
