Paris: Historical Events, Religion And Culture
Historical events, religions and languages-
Paris is a city that wears its history on its sleeve. To its massive landmarks and amazing culture through the years, its history changed it to what we all know today. Paris got its name hundreds of years ago when a tribe that lived where Paris is today where defeated by the roman army in 52 BC. The city was now commonly known as parisuis which translated from roman to French became Paris. The famous Notre-dame building is one of the most famous cathedrals in the world which was constructed around 1260 when louis VII was in reign. The structure was an example of French medieval architecture but was sadly destroyed in 2019 when it caught on fire destroying the roof completely. The Eiffel tower is one of the most famous and recognizable structures in the world today. Plans of building the structure began in 1889 on the 100th anniversary of the French revolution. Although many people did not like the idea of it getting, construction began a year later in 1890 and took almost two years to build. The major religions practised in Paris can include Christianity, Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism plus many more. Although many people think that English is spoken widely through Paris, about less than 20 percent of France can speak English. The most commonly used languages used in Paris are French and Occitan. Occitan has seven dialects which are widely spoken through both Paris and France. These can include gascon, limousin and vivaroalpenc.
Art in Paris-
As a result of the many artists and art that came from there, Paris is now also known as the “city of art”. One of the biggest reasons why Paris is so famous is because of the art that calls the city home. Paintings to sculptures Paris is any art lovers dream holiday destination. In Paris there is around 130 different art museums which you can visit yourself but one of the most famous museums located there is the Musee du louvre or the louvre museum. Musee du louvre is one of the most famous art galleries in the world which contains 460 thousand sculptures and objects and 35 thousand pieces of art. There are some many pieces of art there that if you looked at each one for thirty seconds it would take one hundred days to complete. Some pieces you can see while visiting the museum can include the Mona Lisa, the Venus de milo, the raft of medusa any many, many more. Another famous museum in Paris is the Musee d’Orsay which holds art from famous artists like Vincent van Gogh and his collection of art. Some other monuments or sculptures you can visit around the city can include arc de triomphe, the thinker, Sainte- Chapelle, the flame of liberty and rmn- grand palais. Even if you don’t visit the museums you can still walk around the city to experience the art.
Landforms, climate and vegetation-
The city of Paris occupies around 66 square kilometres of the lle de France (the most popular area of France). Paris is most known and famous for the art it holds making it a popular tourist destination but the landforms through it show a more historical side to the city. Some of these landforms include the Paris basin and the seine valley. The Paris basin is one of the biggest sediment areas deposited onto land by sea. the Paris basin includes the river seine, which is above and below the city of Paris, and stretches at 450 km. The climate in Paris is usually influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. In winter it is cold but not overall freezing whilst summer is warm. Paris is a large city filled with many building, structures and cars, but there is still a broad range of plants that still grow there. The plants in Paris are dependent on the climate so there is usually small wildflowers and grass in one area and oak trees in another.
How does the geography of the area impact the culture? –
The geography and weather can affect the culture in Paris, such as the clothing and food Paris can be cold most of the year but the people living their still want to be stylish so their go to outfits can be, long dresses, suits, coats and berets. Many people in France live in Paris because Paris is mostly flat crop land. This can make it easier to grow the food and livestock they need to survive. Because of the crop land making it easier to grow food, this can be why Parisians eat so much pastry and meaty food because of what the crops have to offer. Also, many rivers run through and around Paris giving the people living their access to fresh drinking water.
