Growing up, I have always had a natural compulsion to care for people in need of help. I had looked after my young ones, volunteered with my church to reach out to the orphans, homeless and the elderly in my community.

My motivation to become an adult nurse, ignited when my mother was diagnosed with acute sinus. I spent a lot of time with her in the hospital ward. I was appalled to see that she and the other patients were not given enough care and attention. There were few nurses to answer to their needs and the ones available were impolite. Being in that environment, I was able to see that no human is inevitable to any sickness and it could be me lying on that sick bed. This triggered my determination that I want to be a nurse someday and so I can be able to provide optimal care to people who are unwell and in need.

When I moved into the UK in 2015, I discovered I could get an opportunity to go back into education. I took up courses which were gateways for me to achieving my goals and career to becoming an adult nurse.

During my Pre-access course, an introduction to physiology and human biology which explains how the human cells, tissues, organs and bones are structured for the body to move, gave me an understanding that to be an adult nurse, knowing how the human body is structured and functions is mandatory, to be able to take care of my patients successfully. Studying sociology has also improved my understanding that working within the health sector involves meeting different people every day from diverse ethnic and cultural background and it is of great importance to uphold the value of inequality and discrimination. As well as to be able to understand and respect my patients cultural and religious beliefs.

The ability to communicate effectively is a vital skill required in nursing which I have been able to acquire from my studies in maths and English. It has enhanced my literacy and numeracy skills. I was able to brush up on my mathematical statistics and equations which I will need when working out the right amount of medication a patient would be given. My English has also helped me in developing my writing, listening and speaking skills.

Furthermore, I had been able to top-up my skills in computer literacy which I understand is a developing technique that is required especially as the world is advancing technologically. Informatic skills are required in nursing in carrying out some basic input such as electronic prescriptions and patient’s health care records.

The capability to take care of people who are at their poor state and making them feel self-sufficient is a vital responsibility required of a nurse. I have been able to demonstrate such skills while working as a domiciliary care worker. I visited people in their home and attended to their needs such as giving personal hygiene, meal preparations, domestic tasks, administering of medication and filing out service user’s care plan. Working as a domiciliary worker has also given me the opportunity to experience some situations where I had to work with my own initiative to solve problems. No day is the same when working as a carer, however, at the end of the day what matters is that I have made someone smile. My placement at Halesowen job centre has also improved my customer service skills.

My propensity to show compassion and care towards people is what has driven me to work towards a career as an adult nurse. I understand that nursing is a demanding role but, despite that, what really matters is knowing that with every challenge that I might encounter it could be turned into a positive approach and learning something new from my patients and colleagues. Besides that, my ultimate objective is providing happiness to vulnerable people as well as contributing to my community.

Other than my acquired skills, I am a good planner and always eager to learn something new. Reading and recreational activities are my hobbies which helps me to relax and get my brain refresh.
