There are many different stakeholders regarding the issue of abortion. Including women involved, foetus, families, religion and doctors. Two common sides of this debate are ‘pro- choice’ or ‘pro-life’. People who are believe against the action of abortion are known as ‘pro-life’ as they support the life of the unborn baby. This group often believe that life starts at the beginning of conception, therefore abortion is seen as a murder action and believe it is unjust for a foetus to be killed. The contradicting group are the people who support abortion. These individuals are known as ‘pro-choice’ as they support the women’s choice on abortion. They believe that as it is the women who is giving birth, she has control over body and should be allowed to do as she wants. Other stakeholders involved in this issue include the doctors. From a medical perspective most doctors take a ‘pro-choice’ stance. A well known doctor, Sofia Buenaventura (MD obstetrics and Gynecology) states she is ‘here for one reason: advocating for my patients and just making sure that they have the rights to get a safe abortion in the future. Nobody should have that right taken away from them.’ Doctors take into consideration that a ban on abortions will not completely stop the procedure from happening, but only increase the likelihood of women performing it on themselves in unsafe conditions and resulting in more women suffering and possibly dying.

Whitney Goldsberry (MD Gynaecologic Oncology) supports this statement and believes ‘women deserve better’ she is involved in a group in Alabama (America) which fights for abortion rights for women.

Many organisations have been introduced due to the different views on this issue. An example is Planned Parenthood, it is a worldwide organisation. It focuses on providing men and women on sex education and health care. This organisation is ‘pro-choice’, meaning they fully support access to abortion. ‘Planned Parenthood believes in the fundamental right of each individual, throughout the world, to manage his or her fertility, regardless of the individual’s income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or residence.’ – Planned Parent hood website.

Planned Parenthood believe that women should have the right to decide whether or not they should get an abortion.

‘We believe that reproductive self-determination must be voluntary and preserve the individual’s right to privacy.’ – Planned Parenthood website. The organisation shows to have multiple offices across the country where men or women can approach them for help. Each patient is provided with health care services that protect their privacy. They are able to perform abortion surgeries in health offices. Care Net is a ‘pro-life’ organisation that offer support to women who are pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant. They believe that abortion is morally incorrect, and offer alternative options to women other than abortion. ‘Care Net is a Christ centred ministry whose mission is to promote a culture of life within our society in order to serve people facing unplanned pregnancies and related sexual issues.’ – Care Net website. They try to help women, and by this believe it will directly make a bigger impact on the issue of abortion than fighting in the legal world. Care Net is religiously based, they believe that abortion is seen as murder and therefore is not following the 6th commandment ‘Thou shall not kill.’ It was shown that in 2009, this organisation has helped more than 425,000 women. As well as helping more than 23,600 women who were in a post-abortion recovery group. Although being a ‘pro choice’ organisation, they still respect women who have had an abortion and assist with their recovery from the ‘tragedy’.
