In the novel “Pride and Prejudice,” Jane Austen utilizes Darcy’s pride and bias to show how one’s wealth, status and sophistication is a barrier of egotism that keeps the high class and low class of society from crashing against each other, yet everything changes when he meets a beloved young lady who has similar ethics. Darcy is one of the focal characters in the novel that permits his pride to assume control over how he sees his social inferiors. He realizes that he is intelligent, wealthy, and charming. However, he is snobbish and arrogant to the people of poverty like the bennets. This characteristic he holds is something that he has to overcome.

In the society of pride and prejudice, Darcy estranged himself from others because of his intense pride. He didn’t comprehend why he should create friendships with people who aren’t as rich, educated, and sophisticated as he is. For instance, at the main ball with the Bennet’s, many of the sisters and acquaintances weren’t fond of his attitude “His character was decided. He was the proudest, most disagreeable man in the world, and everybody hoped he would never come there again.” This statement shows how everyone rushed to pass judgement on Darcy’s initial introduction, in spite of the fact that he is worth a fortune and has high social status, his personality doesn’t show good character only a selfish, haughty man that many people disliked; specifically, his beloved Elizabeth who felt insulted at the ball.

In the title “Pride and Prejudice” Pride implies having high assessments of one’s own value and Prejudice implies judging others without facts. Darcy speaks to pride while Elizabeth speaks to pride in the public eye. In any case, the two of them hold pride and prejudice. Elizabeth is the most intelligent of the five sisters. She was the only one that caught Darcy’s attention. However, Elizabeth’s low social status and poverty stop Darcy from falling in love as her social status doesn’t compare to his, so he attempts his best to evade her. All things considered, Darcy’s pride makes him look down on the individuals who are not inside his social circle. This reveals how his influence on social status and wealth affected his relationship with Elizabeth. Social status influences every relationship between the upper class and lower class. It is a divider between the people with extraordinary fortune and the individuals of poverty. It’s social suicide. A solitary woman with low fortune must be in want of a husband if they are looking for financial stability, adequate job placement and protection. It all came down to marriage for affection or marriage for financial bases.

The society that spins around Darcy shows us how men consider women to be weak and dependent. The greatest moral issue is the thing that you’re permitted and committed to do in order to acquire a husband. Appearances and approval in society were absolutely critical in the 19th century that during that time women didn’t have any options but a goal to get married with wealthy men in order to carry on with an agreeable life. Moreover, women needed to satisfy the principles of society“ A woman must have thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing, and the modern languages to deserve the word; and besides all this, she must possess a certain something in her air of manner of walking, the tone of her voice…” This quote emphasizes how women were continually being condemned by society. Wear this, wear that, be a woman, don’t be too fat, don’t be too thin, man like women who look this way, you’re wearing too much, you need to learn how to sing, be a lady that is what men want. Women are always having to fall into the standards of society; they are never seen as intelligent, as brave, society in pride and prejudice believe women can’t handle themselves, they need a man to marry. However, Darcy is attracted to Elizabeth because he is infatuated with her strong views and perspective on things. She shows how a woman can have intelligence and a mind of their own. She wanted to marry for love. Not wealth. In order for her to do that she had to get rid of prejudice towards Darcy and Darcy had to let go of his pride to let love do its thing.

Darcy’s alienation revealed a lot about his society from marriage to woman’s reputation, to social class and rank, to letting go of his high self-esteem. Money shouldn’t matter enough if it makes people overlook your personality and characterize you as snobbish and selfish. Darcy didn’t quite understand that because there was also a division, a law, a requirement. Being wealthy was a power. But love was a necessity. To others, it was a bonus, if you married someone wealthy and they loved you congrats, if not then still congrats because you are now in the upper class of society so there’s no way you’ll be judged. Nonetheless, Darcy defeated his pride and proposed to Elizabeth making it clear that all along his pride restricted his attraction for her, “ in vain, I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently i admire and love you.”At first, he didn’t want to believe he was in love with her because he was embarrassed by her family. Her family wasn’t wealthy, they were considered lower class. But Elizabeth’s dad, Mr. Bennet wanted all his daughters to find someone wealthy and worthy of their love so they could be set in society. The following quote is Elizabeth’s response to Darcy’s first proposal “ Mr. Darcy, if you suppose that the mode of your declaration affected me in any other way, then as is spared the concern which I might have felt in refusing you, had you behaved in a more gentlemanlike manner.” Elizabeth felt different, she wanted to marry for passion, however her enthusiasm wasn’t there for Darcy as she, despite everything, held her pride and prejudice high for him. She believed that her judgements are never wrong and one presumptuous rich man can never show signs of change. Furthermore, Elizabeth became aware of Darcy’s better characteristics. His contact with Elizabeth gave her what a superior man he was once set his pride aside, he became mindful of his faults. Not long after, Elizabeth did the same, she let go of her prejudice and said “I do, I do like him.. I love him”

At last, a very handsome young man, with a family fortune, high-class reputation risked it all for the girl he cherishes. Darcy was one of the primary characters in Pride and Prejudice, who uncovered society’s moral values and criticism of traditions in the period they lived in through Elizabeth. Towards the end, love conquers all and communication is finally valued. Love conflicted with society, wealth and reputation.
