Have you ever wondered, “why do people lie?” Throughout all the stories we read this unit, 3 stories stuck out to me on how they lied and ended up getting caught. A story that portrays my theme statement is Charles. Another story that illustrates my theme statement is The Jacket. The last story that caught my attention is Thank You Ma’am. A moral of all these stories is that lying is not always the answer, the truth will most likely come out in the end.

The first story that portrays my theme statement is Charles. In the story, A kindergartener named Laurie came home from school everyday and explained to his mother the trouble a boy named Charles caused in the classroom. Throughout the story, Charles became more and more disrespectful to his peers and staff. In the end of the story, Laurie’s mother went to a conference, and questioned the teacher about Charles. As the mother explained what Laurie has told her, the teacher said that there wasn’t a Charles in kindergarten and explained how Laurie was the one causing all the commotion in the classroom. “Today Charles hit the teacher.” This quote is clarifying how the boy Charles hit the teacher, but since Laurie is actually Charles, Laurie’s parents would’ve gotten a phone call explaining how he was being disrespectful and physical with staff. “We don’t have any Charles in kindergarten.” According to Laurie’s teacher, there was not a Charles in that grade, and Laurie is the one causing all the ruckus in the classroom.

Another story that illustrates my theme statement is The Jacket. This story is about how a boy obtained a coat from his mother, that he was not to fond of. He decided to act as if he admired the jacket, but later blamed the piece of clothing for all the bad moments he had. “Smiling a thank you to my mom as I passed by in the kitchen.” In plain english, the quote is saying that

He decided to act as if he admired the jacket, but later blamed the piece of clothing for all the bad moments he had. “Smiling a thank you to my mom as I passed by in the kitchen.” In plain english, the quote is saying that after the boy received the jacket from his mom, he decided to hide the truth from her, and pretended he liked it. “She said that there were children in Mexico who would love that jacket. I told her this is America and yelled that Debbie, my sister, didn’t have a jacket like that.” This piece of evidence is explaining how he ended up telling his mom how he actually feels about the coat.

Last but not least, the story Thank You Ma’am portrays my thesis statement. This story is about a boy named Roger who attempted to mug a lady in an alley, yet she stood up for herself and ended up taking him home after howling at him to see why he tried to take possession of her purse. At first, he lied about why he attempted to snatch her belongings, but in the end confessed why he did what he did. “The woman said what did you want it for? The boy said I didn’t aim to, she said you a lie!” This quote is clarifying that he lied about trying to take her possessions, but she called him out on it, as well as how why he tried to take her stuff. “I wanted a pair of blue suede shoes.” This quote is saying that in the end of the story, he ended up confessing that he tried to take her purse for money to buy some new shoes.

In the end, lying is never the answer. As shown in all my evidence, the truth ended up coming out in the end. Although I only shared a few stories about lying, they still strongly showed that lying can affect an issue or topic and how the truth always finds a way out.
