Rottweilers originally were bred for tasks such as pulling carts to take to the market for farmers and butchers. The Germans used to call them ‘Rottweiler Metzgerhund’ which meant rotweil butcher dogs. Rotweilers themselves are decribed as extremly intteligent, calm and confident. Physically Rottweilers have exceptional strength which would explain why they were so good for pulling carts to the market. This also means that need to be walked often because of the amopunt of energy they have.

When did rottwilers first come in to history? This is a big qustion since it is hard to pinpoint the exact time. They were first mentioned in Roman times as the drover dogs which they are decended from. They needed durable dogs that could herd their livestock for long periods of time and protect it. This means they would be a very ancient dog breed, about roughly 2,000 years. A few centuries after the Roman empire collapsed they went over to the German town Rottweil which is were they got their name.

Rottweiler temperment can be described in many ways. If you asked the public they would say agressive for the most part but that is far from the truth. In fact they are very calm, confident dogs and obediant. They are also extremly intelligent, canine psyschologist Stanley Coren says they are the 10th most intelligent dog breed. This all plays a factor in why Rottweilers are so good at being police dogs, they need these atrributes in a dog so they are easily trained. Height withers on females are 60-61cm and males are 65-66cm. Their weight on average for females is 42kg and for males is 55kg. Rottweiler have a distinct pattern of black with defined tan markings. They have a double coat that is short and thick.

The reasons why rottweilers are good at being police dogs is because of their obedience, intelligence, confidence and loyalty which makes them easy to train. Physically they are amazing to have as they are exceptionally strong. If an attacker were to go for a police officer, a rottweilers strength would easily take down the threat. Also, their loyalty plays a massive factor on why they feel like protecting their human counterpart.

Police dogs benefit society in many ways like being able apprehend criminals and protect their human partner. They are helping to keep civilians and the public safe from violent criminals that are out to harm others. Sniffer dogs also help by finding drugs that would not have been found by a human this means that the drugs cannot have been used and are not redistributed. Search and rescue dogs can find people in disasters, such as earthquakes explosions or maybe even a lost hiker. All these jobs are saving lives and are within what police dogs do. It is truly amazing how much they do for us and its shows from the lives they have saved. Rottweilers job in the UK police force is to intimidate and subdue potential criminals.
