A company weakness is any resource or policy that a business lacks, however it must succeed. First of all, the weakness of McDonald’s is being associated with an unhealthy food image. When people talk about unhealthy food in general, fast-food chains like McDonald’s come to mind. Unfortunately, that’s can’t be a good thing. McDonald’s has been impacted by bad press such as the documentary ‘Supersize Me’ by Morgan Spurlock in which he implicates our society’s health problem with McDonald’s and other fast-food chains. In fact, each McDonald’s dishes contribute a large amount of calories but it does not provide enough nutrition for customers. Trans fat and beef oil are included in McDonald’s dishes. Although it is not illegal, it impacts badly on customers’ health due to the fact that trans fat is one of the ingredients which causes some kind of cancer. Thus, a number of customers who worry about their health issues will stop eating at fast-food restaurants such as McDonald’s. It makes the income of the company decline.

In addition, McDonald over-reliant on low-skilled workers. The majority of McDonald’s employees are semi-skilled. They’re mostly people who can’t for some reason discover a better-paying job. Some of them are college students who take part-time jobs. Most of the McDonald’s workers don’t have high degrees. Actually, one doesn’t need to have any skills to work there. Quite naturally, flipping burgers has never been a job that can pays well. Therefore, these workers have trouble staying motivated. They see their job as a stepping stone to something better elsewhere. Moreover, a large number of McDonald’s workers leave. That means the organization is often looking for labour force to hire. Because most people who accept such jobs aren’t trained, they need the training to become regular staff. However, the cost of training workers is expensive.

Furthermore, due to the popularity of McDonald’s, it regularly faces the problem of long queues. Besides, the introduction of self-service kiosk makes the problem of long queues worst, especially that customers who don’t know how to use the self-services kiosk, they often ask the waitstaff for recommendations or have questions about how dishes are prepared. The company can’t do that services on a screen. It will also waste a lot of time of customers to make an order. This will result in the issue of long queues during peak hours.

After all the weaknesses we discovered, here is some of the solution on those weaknesses. First, the solution on being associated with unhealthy food image is McDonald can organize a food campaign against its unhealthy food image. McDonald can use their chain’s ingredients and invite some famous celebrity chefs to serve cuisine during the campaign. For example, McDonald can use their signature menu which is Chicken McNugget to create a Kung Pao chicken drenched with sweet and sour sauces and add the finishing touch with parsley. This action will change consumers’ stereotypes about McDonald. Besides hosting a food campaign, they can also try to shake its junk-food image by trimming down the nutrition facts of their food by setting nutritional guidelines. For instance, McDonald can set their happy meal option to have 600 calories or lower and reduce the amount of sodium used so that the parents can let the children have a healthier happy meal without worrying about health issues.

Secondly, the solution on over-reliant on low skilled workers is McDonald can implement a training program for every existing worker. The training program can be as basic as teaching the workers how to cook the patty, fry the French fries and how to assemble the burgers. With the focus on developing their own training programme, this would definitely reduce the number of low skilled workers of McDonald. Even though this would eventually increase their cost but this would obviously give their customer a good experience to dine in here and improve their work performance. If providing training can’t work so well, it may be time for McDonald to reconsider the way when they hire new employees. McDonald can select the workers which had the experience to work in the same industries. When they hired the right employees, this would solve McDonald’s problem on over-reliant on low skilled workers.

Thirdly, the solution on long queues during peak hours is McDonald should arrange some manpower stand-by at the kiosk machine. The workers will guide the customer step by step to use the kiosk machine. This will help to reduce the queuing time as the customer will understand how to order and how to make payment when using the machine. Besides that, McDonald should also restore the cashier services as well even though McDonald has already implemented the kiosk machine for the customers. When the cashier service was restored, automatically the queue will split into two as some of the customers would prefer to use back the old way to order their foods. When there is several services to choose then the long queue problem would be solved.
