Abstract

Self-awareness is the first step towards enhancing ones emotional intelligence. Today’s corporate world is looking for emotional strong leaders. Hence this study in undertake primarily as a self- evaluation tool for the millennium youth to introspect themselves and to be more self-aware.

II. Introduction

Information of Things has simplified the life of the people, making anything and everything available at the swipe of a finger. Technology has literally placed our life in autopilot mode. We the humans are so engrossed in technology that we have lost the ability to be more self aware of our behaviour. We have consciously allowed technology to control our life, in many areas of our life, thus reducing our innate character of emotional intelligence. The artificial intelligence is sub consciously taking control over our emotional intelligence.

Technological advancement is loading us with heaps of information, clustering our minds with loads of apprehensiveness and less conscious awareness of things within, outside and around us. We the people for the purpose of instant gratification have exploited ourselves and are slowly failing to use our sixth sense. Fortunately, many our consciously waking up from this instant fascination and have started to realign their thinking to re-establish the essence of mankind and the eco-system.

I.I Self-awareness

Self-awareness is an awareness of the self, with the self-being what makes one’s identity unique. These unique components include thoughts, experiences, and abilities. Psychologist Daniel Goleman proposed a popular definition of self-awareness in his best-selling book “Emotional Intelligence,” as “knowing one’s internal states, preference, resources, and intuitions.”

Self-awareness goes beyond accumulating knowledge about ourselves: it is also about paying attention to our inner state with a beginner’s mind and an open heart. The ability to monitor our emotions and thoughts from moment to moment is key to understanding ourselves better, being at peace with who we are and proactively managing our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. In addition, self-aware people tend to act consciously (rather than react passively), and tend to be in good psychological health and to have a positive outlook on life. They also have a greater depth of life experience and are more likely to be more compassionate.

Today many corporate have started to realize for effective use of artificial intelligence the emotional intelligence has to be expertise. This alone can sustain the eco-system and mankind. The UNO too realizing the need to protect the earth has developed comprehensive sustainable development goals to be achieved by 2030. To achieve these goals the politicians, policy makers, professionals, entrepreneurs, young and the old and all have to look beyond their smart devices and look around, acknowledging the presence of their neighbours and re developing strong interpersonal relationships. For this to happen, every individual need to get to know about himself- be more self aware.

I.2 Remedies to be more self-aware

  • One needs to disconnect from his social media status and reconnect with the reality of life on earth
  • Not letting feelings to be determined by the counts of likes, shares and comments, but by seeing and experiencing the joy and pains of Mother Nature
  • Emotions has to be trained so as to emit mindful behaviours
  • Understanding our life pattern and modifying it to synchronize with productive eco friendly activities
  • Avoid synthesised living and rejuvenate with a healthy lifestyle
  • Step to achieve realistic goals – goals which will pamper the eco-system and provide sustainable benefits to people.

I.3 Women and self-awareness

The creator has gifted the women with the gift of motherhood. Hence she plays a vital role of sustaining mankind. Women are responsible to bring forth physically, mentally and aesthetic individuals into this world. Women are the mother nurtures her children with happiness, goodness and healthiness from the moment it is conceive in her womb.

The nature of motherhood is also taken a back seat with the IoT trend. This study is undertaken to create an awareness among young women students of Kumbakonam town to be more self aware of themselves and step start their life valuing the greatest gift as sustainers of this Earth.

III. Review of Literature

Self-awareness is the comprehensive knowledge about yourself. “Comprehensive” means every aspect of you, including your personality, strengths, weaknesses, emotions, passion and more. “Knowledge” refers to an objective and non-judgemental evaluation.

Dr. Philippe Rochat suggests 5 different levels of self-awareness: confusion, differentiation, situation, identification and permanence. The final stage will be the capability to see yourself from a third person’s perspective

IV. Research Design

Statement of Problem

“Man needs the Earth to survive, but Earth can survive without Mankind”

The above quote has prompted to undertake the need for sustainable development and the role of women. To work towards sustainable development it is required to understand the purpose of our living in this earth. This is feasible only if we the individuals develop a strong self-awareness of ourselves. This study is basically an aid for young women to introspect themselves.

Kumbakonam town is an ancient temple town, where all religious people coexist in peaceful harmony. This town is buzzing with Hindu, Muslim and Christian pilgrims because of its strategic proximity to the Navagraha temples, Nagoor Dharghar and Velakanni Church. As religion is an integral part of Indian society, this study was undertaken in this pilgrim town of Kumbakonam.

III.1 Objective of the study

  1. To rate the most important thing in life of the respondents
  2. To analyse the time taken to fulfil the important things in life

III.2 Data type

Primary data was collected among college students of Kumbakonam town.

III.3 Sample Size

50 respondents were administered with a well structured question. Stratified sampling technique was used to collect data.

Interpretation

The above table shows that family is the first most important thing in life for most of the respondents with 24%, it is closely followed by career with 22%, love and affection was ranked third with 18%, closely followed fourth and fifth by knowledge and eco-system with 16% and 14% respectively and the last rank was given to money with just 6%.

Interpretation

Following are the inferences drawn from the above table:

Career 28% of the respondents spend 12 to 15 hours a day for career, 14% each spend 1 to 3 hrs, 3-6 hrs and 9-12 hrs , 8% each spend 6-9 hours, 15-18 hours and 18-21 hours and 6% of the respondents spend 21-24 hours for their career

Money 48% of the respondents spend 18 to 21 hours for earning money, 24% of them spend 21 to 24 hours, 8% spend 18 to 21 hours, 6% spend 0 to 3 hours, 4% spend 12 to 15 hours and 2% each spend 3 t0 6 hours, 6 to 9 hours and 9 to 12 hours respectively.

Family 20 % of the respondents spend 21 to 24 hours with family, 20% spend 18 to 21 hours, 14% spend 12 to 15 hours, 12% spend 6 to 9 hurs, 10% spend 3 to 6 hours, 4% each spend 9 to 12 and 18 to 21 hours,

Love and affection 26% spend 6 to 9 hours to share therierr love and affection, 22% spend 3 to 6 hurs, 16% each spend 0 to 3 hours and 9 ti 12 hours, 6 each spend 12 to 15 hurs, 12 to 15 hours and 21 to 24 hours respectively.

Knowledge 18% spend 6 to 9 hours and 18 to 21 seeking knowledge, 16% each of seek it for 9 to 12 hours and 18 to 21 hours, 12% seek for 12 to 15 hours, 10% seek for 15 to 18 hours, 6% seek for 3 to 6 hours and 4% seek for 0 to 3 hours.

VI. Suggestion

Based on the responds the following suggestions have been made:

  1. As family bonding is the most important thing, it is suggested that social media and mass media, should be used in creating positive family ties and good parenting through series, short films and advertisements
  2. Pedagogy should focus on shaping the skills at early adolescence stage itself. This will help the youth to focus on opting for the right career development academic course at collegiate level. Further it is suggested that curriculum should be more applicable oriented, focusing on developing the employability skills.
  3. As eco-system is ranked second last, it is suggested to that the youth should be given a lot of awareness on the protection of the eco-system and made to realise that sustainable development is feasible only by enriching the environment.

VII. Conclusions

This study helped the youth of Kumbakonam town to introspect the most important thing in their life, which is just one aspect of understanding of one self. This study basically helped ost of the respondents realized the purpose of their life and started working toward fulfilling it. To conclude this study is an eye opener to this generation millenniums to rely more on emotional intelligence and preserve life on earth. This study is only a tip of the iceberg in exploring the real image on an individual.
