Moving forward the Chillingham Castle is said to be the environment or home to many ghosts that haunt the halls or shall one say walls of the Castle. “The castle over the many years has been remodeled and excavated and many artifacts have been discovered over the years”(Chillingham). Many people have experienced things here in Chillingham Castle. Orbs have been seen and photographed and some people have actually picked up emotions from the rooms. All of the rooms have a depressing feel to it.

“The first evidence of a haunting would be the blue or radiant boy. Who according to the owners the Blue Boy used to haunt the Pink Room in the castle. Guests supposedly reported seeing blue flashes and a blue ‘halo’ of light above their beds after a loud wail. It is claimed that the hauntings ceased after renovation work revealed a man and a young boy inside a 10-foot-thick (3.0-metre) wall.

The second evidence of a haunting is another ghost named Lady Mary Berkeley wife of Lord Grey of Wark and Chillingham. “Lord Grey fell in love with Lady Mary’s sister and they took off together”. Lady Mary was left in the castle all alone with her little girl. “Lady Mary ended up killing herself she now wonders the corridors of Chillingham Castle looking for Lord Grey”. Tourist of Chillingham Castle have heard the rustle of a dress around the castle or get chills as if a ghost walked by.

Third evidence of a haunting is the “Inner Pantry Ghost” in Chillingham Castle there is an inner pantry. The inner pantry was where the past owners put all their silver. The presence of this ghost was a young girl that was poisoned by a glass of water. “There was a guard that was on duty one night when he turned and behind him was a pale woman dressed all in white. She whispered to him that she needed a glass of water”. When the guard went to get the pale girl a glass of water he realized that he was locked inside the inner pantry and no one could get inside.

Borley Rectory was built in 1862 by Reverend Henry Dawson Ellis Bull on Hall Road near Borley Church. “The rectory was severely damaged by a huge fire in 1939 and was torn down by 1944”. Henry Dawson moved into Borley one year after being Rector of the building. “The house replaced an earlier rectory on the site that had been destroyed by fire in 1841”(Home Report). The Borley Rectory was built for the Rector and his family to live in.

The environment of Borley Rectory is very depressing and dark feeling all threw the rooms and halls of the building. “One could safely say that the appearance of the new Borley Rectory elicited uncomfortable feelings of spookiness”. The foundations of Borley had underground tunnels and lots of secret vaults in it. Borley Rectory has over 20 rooms and is 3 stories high. It is said that Borley Rectory is haunted house because of all the events that have happened on the site centuries before.

The most popular haunting of Borley Rectory is the nun. “The legend tells of a nun that was from the Bures convent”(Ghost story). But nun ended up falling in love with a monk so they decided to run away together. “A friend that the monk had tried to help them escape the Rectory by getting them out on a carriage”. But ended up failing and the drivers of the carriage got their head cut off while the nun was bricked up in the walls alive and the monk was hung.

Second evidence of a haunting at Borley Rectory is the Headless Phantoms. When Henry Bull and his family lived there they would report seeing two headless phantoms that would tear through the area during the night. “Henry’s wife had believed that she saw a horse drawn carriage at night”. The two head less phantoms were part of the scheme help get the nun and the monk away from Borley Rectory centuries ago. But ended up getting their heads cut off so now they lurk around Borley.

“Berry Pomeroy Castle was built in the 15th century by the Pemeroy family which has held the land since the 11th century”. By 1547 the Pemeroy family started to have a lot of financial trouble so they ended up selling all their land to Edward Seymore. This Castle had no particular purpose except for kings and their families to live in it. But in 1685 the castle was struck by lighting and by 1701 Berry Pemeroy was nothing but a bunch of ruins.

This Castle has a very dark and overwhelming feeling to it as soon as you step foot inside its walls. “As more people visit this castle the supernatural occurrences have multiplied and have not stopped yet”. People for years have claimed to see phantoms moving threw all parts of the building. “Others have heard strange noises or have been overwhelmed by feelings of panic and nausea”. So now many people claim as Berry Pemeroy to be the most haunted castle.

The Child Of Isabella is the first evidence of a haunting at Berry Pemeroy Castle. The stories of Isabella come from the kitchen of this haunted castle. “The story of this young girl tells that her mother was being attacked in the kitchen by a group of visiting noble men”. Isabella came in and tried to save her mom in the attack but ended up getting herself killed too. “The child’s presence has been felt about the kitchens ever since and is thought to inspire intense fear”. She stays in the kitchen and seeks for help from friendly visitors to the castle and is said to have followed them back home.

Next is the White Lady she is one of the most famous ghost of this castle. The White Lady is said to haunt the dungeon and St. Margaret’s Tower at Berry Pemeroy.“Rumoured to be the ghost of Lady Margaret Pomeroy who was imprisoned by her older sister for being prettier”. The White Lady was left in the dungeon for many years and eventually she starved to death. “Those that have experienced the White Lady’s presence has felt a sense of evil and hatred”.

The third most popular haunting would be the Blue Lady. “ Blue Lady is thought to be a daughter of the Pomeroy family”. The young girl was forced into a relationship with her father. So when she gave birth to the child she ended up killing it to try and keep the child from having a fate like hers. She now walks around Berry Pemeroy Castle at night and has been witnessed by very many guards and tourists to this day. “She calls for help from visitors and tries to get them to the most dangerous parts of the castle so she can push them to their deaths”.

In conclusion, all of Britain has very many haunted places to visit these are just 3 of the many. These three attractions have housed many entities over the past centuries. Chillingham Castle, Borley Rectory, and Berry Pemeroy Castle are three of the most haunted places in Britain due to the history, the environment and eyewitness accounts. If you choose to visit one of these places you will not be let down but surprised of what Britain has to offer.
