The Problem Of Time Travelling In A Science Fiction Novella The Time Machine

The novel ‘The Time Machine’ is a science fiction novella. It introduces us to a very talented English scientist Time traveller. He was living in Richmond surrey in England. The novel starts with a view of a room in which Time traveller is talking to some of his friends. There was a dinner party going at time traveller’s house and he was telling his friends about the fourth dimension. He told them that time is a fourth dimension. He told them that as we can move in all the three dimensions we can also move in the fourth dimension. He told them that he has made a machine to travel in time i.e. now by that machine he can go in future as well as in the past. He then shows his machine to his guests and asked one of his friends to press the lever of the machine, and then the small machine disappeared.

Time traveller told that the small machine has gone in the future. Next week when again time traveller’s friends came to his house then Time traveller came there with dirty clothes and he told his friends that he has gone to future and then he started telling his story to his friends. He told them that only this morning his big time machine was completely made he then went inside the machine and then pulled the lever of the machine and when the machine stopped he founded himself in a garden. He saw some white buildings he then saw a small person wearing purple colour dress and these kind of people were known as Eloi. And then around seven to eight people of the same kind came near to him and they started touching him confirming that what they were seeing is real or not.

Time traveller removed the handles of the time machine. He was landed in 802,701AD. Those people were very happy but were quite fragile. Time traveller ate food with them and was trying to understand their language. Time traveller thought that technology has conquered nature and in the future neither strength nor human intellect is required. Now in this time, there is no place for moral values. Time traveller spends his whole day there and then thought of going back but when he went back to his machine then he saw that his machine is not there and he then thought that these small people might have taken his machine. After some time he saved one of these people from drowning, her name was Weena. He then saw two monkey- like animals.

The Elois used to call them Morlocks. He then thinks that the people in this time are divided on the basis of their social status. The one who are poor are living below the ground and are called Morlocks and those who are rich are living above the ground and are Elois. He thought that the Morlocks have stolen his machine and went below the ground through a well but the Morlocks attacked him. He then thought that the Elois have become weak because of not working and the Morlocks have become very strong and now they have started attacking Elois.

The time traveller then goes to a museum with Weena where he starts making a weapon. Weena get scared by seeing all this. Then they heard the voices of Morlocks and started running towards the forest there also they heard the voices of the Morlocks and time travellers sets a fire there he then killed many Morlocks with the handle of the time machine. After some time the fire becomes very large and the Morlocks run away. Then the time traveller finds his machine and he again goes in future then he sees that all things are nearly damaged on earth and then again he moves in future and then after time travelling millions of years he reaches a place where he sees signs of life and after spending some time there he again goes back to his house where his friends were waiting for him. he was very tired and he was carrying some flowers. One of his friends asked him to take his white flowers for research but he denied, these were the flowers which Weena gave him. all his friends then leave and except the narrator, no one was believing in his story. The narrator came back to time traveller after some days with the editor and time traveller told him that if they could wait for him then he could probably give them the proofs of his time travelling. But now probably he will not come back because the narrator had been waiting for him from the last three years.
