I was 14 years old when my computer science teacher asked for a volunteer in the class to help her explain coding by trying it out on the class computer. Having a basic knowledge in coding to supplement my immense love for the subject, I was the first person to walk up in front of everyone. Little did I know that I was going to embarrass myself by failing to create a very basic HTML code. Later on, while I was reflecting on the day’s incidents, I saw a quote that has been sitting on my desk for years and suddenly it made more sense. “Little strokes fell great oaks”. It was at that moment I decided to practice coding to a point where I don’t have to feel embarrassed about the incident in my life. I am Bharath Srinivasan and this is a short version of how I lead my life free of regrets.

At the age of 16, two years after deciding to explore more about coding, I had figured out that being a programmer was my calling. The mere basic knowledge I had about coding had turned into a moderate database for coding solutions. I kept exploring and found out that to be one of the best programmers in the world, I would have to dedicate more time and energy into making it into my dream career. I decided to pursue computer science full-time from high school.

By the time I finished high school I had nurtured by advanced basic skills in programming. Topping my school’s programming classes and helping my fellow students become better coders along the way, I learnt not only from classes, but from various other sources and the people around me. One could say my curious nature and the drive to question whenever possible helped me a lot with becoming a better programmer.

After completing my high school, I walked into my undergraduate studies to pursue my bachelor’s degree in computer science, with an extensive skillset containing first-hand programming knowledge of C and C++ programming languages. This helped me during my first year of studies to breeze through modules like object-oriented programming structures and data structures. The following summer, I interned with the top robotics team at my hometown as part of their programming team and helped develop automated mini robots. This helped me realise my interest in automation as well. Going into my second year was exciting as I had extensive knowledge from my internships and various self-study courses. I looked forward to showcasing my skills at every opportunity I got and started participating in various events at different universities. Travelling to different states and cities to reach top universities in the country for the events helped me increase my comfort zone by a lot. I kept pushing myself out of my comfort zone to satisfy my thirst for knowledge. This made me complete my teenage with a lot more accolades and experience than what I had aimed for. That summer I focused on volunteering at the local non-profit organisation called MAD (Make A Difference) and helped contribute to the education of the underprivileged students. We reached out to the orphanages and children shelters across India and provided them with education by volunteering as teachers.

My keen interest in extra-curricular activities and events did not go unnoticed. I was asked to represent my fellow students as the department secretary of computer science students during my third year of studies and the vice president of the same during my final year. With modules like data analytics, data mining, and data warehousing, juggling between my studies and extracurriculars helped me push my multi-tasking limits and grow out of my comfort zone more. This helped me contribute to organising various events like tech quiz, robotic events, programming competitions on hacker rank platform, and hackathons. This helped me nurture my organisation, leadership, sense of responsibility, and technical skills. Looking into the future, I was sure accepting the vice president role was one of the best decisions I have made as it helped to figure out how to put my skills to practice. The final year of my undergraduate studies was project based. We had to form groups and present our project after developing it over the year. After extensive research and critical analysis of the present-day technologies, we decided to develop a smart garden monitoring system. Our prototype would help monitor gardens and farms, and identify plant diseases using IOT and Machine learning technologies. The prototype helped us research more in the field and this let us arrive at our final presentation with results based on extensive research data. We published a journal on “Smart garden monitoring system and controlling pesticide using IOT and Machine Learning” in the International journal of Research in Advent Technology. This project helped me attain full credits during my final year of undergraduate studies.

After completing my undergraduate studies, I set out to gain new skills and improve my technical skillset. I mastered Java, Python, and R Programming. Being keen on data analytics helped me improve my existing knowledge of data analytics, data mining, and data warehousing. I also decided that pursuing a postgraduate study in data science would help me become a better programmer and an even better data analyst. Flying to a different country to do my master’s course seemed like the best option to increase my comfort zone and gain multi-cultural experiences which would help me grow into a better person. So, I started researching into various universities the courses offered by them. I continued to search extensively for a programme that suits my specific need for knowledge and help me kickstart my dream career. I came across the MCS Computer Science at University of Dayton and it is the perfect fit. I would like to apply for the course and hopefully get admitted studying under the guidance of your fantastic faculty. This would help me become a better programmer and an analyst than I am today and acquire a skillset that would guide me throughout my career.
