On the southern edge of the Caribbean Sea, you will find a twin-island republic, with its rich culture glistening in the distance. In February, feel submerged in a sea of colour on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, as masqueraders sway like coconut trees to the beautiful sound of steel pan and calypso, and gyrate to the beat of Soca music. They call it the “greatest show on earth” for its elaborate masquerade bands, mesmerizing costumes, pulsating music and relentless feting. Trinidad and Tobago’s carnival has inspired similar celebrations throughout the Caribbean island chain, and worldwide. Such as, New York, Miami, Toronto and Notting Hill (England). But none can rival this explosion of creativity, colour and music. The festival attracts visitors from around the world, inclusive of international celebrities. It is a time of revelry and release; everyone is invited to the party!

Carnival originated from masquerade balls, hosted by French colonisers of the island. However, following emancipation in 1833, the freed slaves could now mimic their former masters without repercussions. ‘Carne vale’ meaning “farewell to the flesh”, is an annual two-day pre-Lenten activity of unapologetic masquerading, leading up to Ash Wednesday. Weeks preceding the ultimate parade, there are competitions, shows and parties, starting just after Christmas culminates. Preparation for the creative aspect of Carnival Days however, begin shortly after the end of the previous carnival.

During the countdown to Carnival, tourists will look on in astonishment as Mas Bands promote their elaborate costumes at Bands Launch. A true site! On Dimanche Gras and International Soca Monarch night, they view the Kings and Queens of the band’s costumes, and witness performances from Calypso and Soca artist. On these nights, artists compete with their songs, specifically created for Carnival. On Panorama night, visitors fall prey to the infectious melodies of the steel bands, and shuffle in one by one, swaying as best they can to the beat. At the fetes, people free their minds as they effortlessly jump in time to the harmony of Soca, Chutney or Calypso music, played by the brass band or fete DJ. The energy and music are so tantalizing, even the onlookers join in. At these parties, tourists experience mouth-watering local dishes, high in flavor and spicy: roti, doubles, corn soup, bake and shark and pelau just to name a few.

Carnival’s enchantment does not solely rest upon the sensory extravaganza, but for the islanders, it is a time to let go and rejuvenate the soul. During this period, they experience a true reflection of what it means to be “Trini”, and all social and class differences are set aside. This is crucial when a country has such a diverse ethnic heritage, to continue the encouraged interbreeding of cultures. Carnival is a time to recognise the arts and display the country’s talent, but also to unwind and enjoy friendships.

The energy, freedom, liveliness and laughter-filled nature of the people, makes for memorable experiences. It is a true reflection of the rich and diverse culture of Trinidad and Tobago.
