The stars in the sky shine like a chest full of diamonds in winter, the thick white snow covering the ground. Nothing beats winter. Being wrapped in a blanket, sipping a warm cup of hot chocolate, feeling the warmth as the drink travels through your body. I will always adore winter for the memories it brings and reminds me of, for all the days that we’d get off of school and for all the snow.

Winter always bring back memories of going to my Grandmother’s house and playing around with my siblings as the cold winds turned our faces to ice. The aroma of candles and warmth filling up the house. It was bubbling and hissing in the background as the fire crackled and warmed up the room. Laughter took over the air. After all the running around, we would take a seat in front of the fire and drink the most delicious vegetable soup ever. You could feel all your taste buds coming to life as you drank the savory soup.

The arrival of winter always meant that we would get days off from school. As the sun started showing its first rays, I looked out the window, up above me, the last of the night stars were fluttering out sadly. They flashed their last, shiny grains of sand in the sky. Clouds were starting to appear in an attempt to hide the sun behind them that had just started showing itself. The screeching winds were dreadful. The sky was now jet black, not showing any signs of a sunny day, the huge clouds now on the move. I heard a tapping on the window and then it turned into a pitter-patter. I could hear the hum of the rain through the window. It sounded like the buzzing of angry bees. Which meant we would get the day off of school on this rainy winter day, all cuddled-up under layers of blankets reading books or watching our favorite TV shows.

However, something that actually makes it feel like winter is snow. The grounds covered with a white fuzzy blanket. Its lacerating winds stripping the last leaves from the trees, leaving them naked and brooding in a harsh world. The streets look like an unfinished painting, so much of the canvas still perfectly white. The tiny snowflakes falling from the sky like ashes after a put-out fire. The cold air leaving your mouth like a cloud of smoke disappearing into the wind. Children skating on the frozen pond making large cracks like gaping wounds. It all just seems perfect, like time could stop right here and nothing would ever go wrong.

In the end, no matter what, winter will forever have a special place in my heart reminding me of hot chocolate, Grandmas soup and all the snow it brings along. Like George R. R. Martin said ”Nothing burns like the cold”.
