In William Shakespeare’s Othello, we’ve learned a lot through the scenes we have read. We learned a lot of the characters and the gray areas behind it. I chose to talk about is Othello, and why he is fit for general. Othello is fit for being a general because of his experience, effort, and confidence. Many people argue the fact that since he is black, he shouldn’t be a fit for general. Being black doesn’t mean anything, I know that the whole concept of the book was focused back in the days when blacks were not appreciated but it really means nothing. You shouldn’t hate on him because of his color, and I believe that he shows all the characteristics of being a general. . Everyone also talks highly about him, such as the duke, and many others.

Othello is a great fit for being a general because of his experiences that he has had. Othello has been into many wars more than any of the characters that are in the book. Othello is a war person, he goes to every war that they assign him to, and he even wins all the war he goes to because of his commands that he gives. People that have served him in the war such as Montano has said many great things about him. “For I have served him, and the man commands / Like a full soldier” (2.1.35-36). Montano talks about how he served with him during the wars, and he is saying Othello can command really greatly. In the book Othello even talks about his experiences very highly, and he is very smart because of how he plans everything.

In scene one Othello says “Were it my cue to fight, I should have known it / Without a prompter” (1.2.83-84). He talks about the experience because he has been to every war, and he knows when to shoot, and when not to. He plans everything really carefully because Othello knows that you have to play smartly when it comes to war. You can’t have any stupid mistakes that will get you killed.

During the court scene when he was being questioned by the council. Brabantio talked about how he didn’t drug Desdemona but the stories he told her were the one that made her love him. Her father loved me; oft invited me; / Still question’d me the story of my life, / From year to year, the battles, sieges, fortunes, / That I have passed” (1.3.128-131). Othello talks about how he got invited to Brabantio house a lot, and he told them about all the war stories he has been in. Through the stories he told them, Desdemona started to feel wooed, and started to love Othello because of the stories he has told her. He didn’t drug her but the stories he told her stole her heart.

As a general or a leader you need to have respect for other people, so they can respect you back. Othello does a great representation of that. Whenever he was talking to someone, he shows them respect, so they can respect him back. Rude am I in my speech, And little bless’d with the soft phrase of peace: For since these arms of mine had seven years’ pith, Till now some nine moons wasted, they have used Their dearest action in the tented field, And little of this great world can I speak,

More than pertains to feats of broil and battle, And therefore little shall I grace my cause

In speaking for myself.” Othello shows a lot of respect in this because he knows that he doesn’t really speak a lot because his the main thing he does is just goes to war, and fight. He never learned the right way to speak, so he is showing a sign of respect, and saying if he is rude, he is sorry for it.

Othello shows a lot of respect in his speech whenever he talks because he knows that he doesn’t talk very professionally, so he tells them that he is trying his best when he is talking. Othello doesn’t want to disrespect anyone when he talks, so he tries his best of being professional and does a good way of showing respect. Showing respect to people is a great skill for a leader because if you can show respect to someone, they will show respect to you.

Another trait to have as a great general is because of his confidence. Othello shows a lot of confidence when he speaks and when he goes to war. ‘Let him do his spite: / My services which I have done the signiory / Shall out-tongue his complaints” (1.2.17-19). When Othello starts talking, he shows a lot of his confidence because he says that I am confident in himself on how he is a military man, and he knows that he is the only one that should have Desdemona.

When Othello talks to Brabantio he says this “I fetch my life and being / From men of royal siege” (1.2.21-22). He talks to Brabantio saying that he shouldn’t look down on him because of his color. His family also sat in the same thrones, and he tells Brabantio that he should stop doubting him because he is just as good as him. Othello talks threatens everyone, saying “Zounds if I stir, / Or do but lift this arm, the best of you / Shall sink in my rebuke” (2.3.207-209). He says that he will treat everyone fairly, but they all should know that something really wrong has happened.

Othello is a great fit for general because of all the qualities he has just because he is black doesn’t mean anything. Everyone should respect him for whom he is because even since he is black, he has done a lot of things for the nation. He has been in every war, and won all of them because of his strategic plays. He also shows respect to everyone he speaks, showing respect is a really great quality to have as general because if you don’t respect them, they can’t respect you. Othello also shows a lot of self-esteem such as him being confident. He knows he is the best in going to war, and he knows that he is going to win Desdemona. Othello is a great fit for being a general because of his qualities. It starts off by his experience, he has been doing this for so long, and he knows how to command people. Respect is another one of the great qualities because whenever he speaks to anyone, he talks to them in a respectful way. It ends with his self-esteem because he knows he is really great in war, and in general it’s always great to show confidence. It tells everyone that you know what you’re doing, and they will follow you.
