General Overview Of Rock Music

Rock music is a genre which can have many definitions. It was initially called ‘rock and roll’, and it was invented in the United States during 1950s. It also developed during the following decade, especially in the United Kingdom too. Rock music was a type of music which took the characteristics of many other genres, from blues to jazz, even classical music – it is like it took the best of every world. This is why it also has so many genres, such as blues rock, or jazz rock, even folk rock. (1) Electric guitar, drums and bass are the main instruments, and it usually requires a vocalist to sing the lyrics. (2)

Rock music, since it has always been very popular, counts a plethora of talented artists. The majority of the most famous ones came from Britain, despite rock being born in the USA. Some of them, which are famous not only in the muggle community, but also among wizards, include Pink Floyd, a band, Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Queen. (4) The latter, in particular, has always been one of my favourites. Since my father is a muggle musician, before he knew I was a witch he wanted me to follow his same path. Thus, he has raised me among a wide variety of musical genres, and when talking about rock, it was always about Queen. They were also a band which formed around 1970, whose members were guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon, drummer Roger Taylor and vocalist Freddy Mercury. They were one of the most famous bands in the world of rock music, and also one of the best-selling: their sales have been estimated up to 300 million records, also featuring in the Hall of Fame. (5)

Our professor made us listen to Bohemian Rhapsody, sung by Queen. As the first notes reached my ear, I suddenly remembered about my father, who loves it and has listened to it countless times. A feeling of nostalgia overcame me, but now that I’m grown up since I last listened to it, I understood the lyrics, which made me really sad. It’s a wonder how such a beautiful song, technically perfect and with a genius melody can contain such dreadful words and heart-breaking story.
