Dystopian theme is a controlled system, which is an illusion of a perfect society. This is shown through the film The Maze Runner by Wes Ball and text The lord flies by William Golding. The Maze Runner is about a boy who woke up in a metal cage in futuristic time zone with no memory of his past life and The Lord of Flies is a text about group of schoolboys that had plane crash on island. Throughout essay I will be introducing the dystopian themes based on three main key points, savagery, setting and civilization.

Throughout The Maze Runner, the film shows various camera angles which shows power. Camera angle are important as it shows the viewers an understanding of the relationship between the characters point of view and shows where movie is set. For example as shown in figure 1, at the start of the film Thomas finds himself unconscious with no memory of who he was. He then realises that the elevator is going up and ends up coming to a sudden stop where he was greeted by a group of boys looking down at him. The camera angle that was used in this scene is a low angle. A low angle shot is to show to a sense of power to make a character look dominant. Figure 2 we can see that, is the opposite of what the group of boys sees as Thomas is looking up to see the group of boys. The camera angle seen in figure 2 is a high angle to show the audience a sense of vulnerability.

The Conch’s power is presented in the very beginning on pg 22 as the children vote for Ralph to be chief just because he was the one with the Conch. ‘ ‘Him with the shell.’ ‘Ralph! Ralph!’ ‘Let him be chief with the trumpet thing’ ‘ this excerpt from pg 22 shows how everybody seems to think that power, responsibility and leadership skills comes from the Conch. Another Example of the Conch’s Power is the fact that through out the book the conch is the only tool that can call a meeting and wherever the Conch is thats where the meeting is. No other symbol in Lord of the Flies holds so much power. This is one of the reasons that Jack Merridew disrespects the Conch. He wants to break the spell the symbol has on everybody. He wants to prove that he is the rightful leader.

In the Maze Runner, Ball authenticates the Savagery throughout the film, by in Glade (The maze) as the boys occur themselves with supplies that attain in only once a week as inclination and dystopian world as the civilization is the lowest in peak, urges the opportunity from the controlled community beyond view them emits within. The Maze Runner movie did help keep the viewer attention. This post-apocalyptic film did meet the expectations for gene. It kept viewer thinking about what was going on and is it possible for this to happen in the future. The film techniques used to bring the story together are very good and added to the emotion effect of the movie. I think that those that have read the book the movie was based off of will be impressed with how the director Wes Ball kept most of the story line the same. If the director had made too many changes and did not use the techniques that was he did the film would not had the same feel and might have detracted the viewers from the story line. If done wrong film would also been confusing this would have made the movie less attractive to viewers.
