My Proposals To Stop Animal Cruelty

Animal cruelty has become a very relevant topic as of late. In order to decrease the growing animal cruelty rate, laws should be implemented. Laws that pertain to the individuals who choose to harm these animals. Along with the laws that pertain to the companies who choose to test their products on animals. Lastly, the awareness of this crime must become more apparent if the changes deemed necessary are to occur. These solutions will help to ensure that the animal cruelty rate will decrease.

My first proposal refers to the laws that would be used to penalize civilians who unjustifiably harm animals. In order for this to be effective, the law should be designated towards neglectfulness, inconsideration, or unjustifiable reasonings. This would be done so that proper fines and or punishments can be doled out accordingly. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has reported various cases of mistreatment to animals, such as being thrown, dogs left in hot cars, and even Herring gulls shot dead. In some cases specifically the person who threw the cat because of a “prank”, should be fined based upon the harm endured by the animal. Now when looking at the individual who shot the Herring gulls has already violated a law. He did so by killing the gulls for no apparent reason. This scenario would then change the severity of the punishment the individual will receive.

My second proposal alludes to laws that should be implemented to stop animal testing in companies. Examples of these companies are as follows: Bobbie Brown, Benefit, Maybelline, and Avon. Not only is animal testing cruel but it is also ineffective. It is said to be ineffective due to the fact that animals and humans have different anatomies, thus the data collected from animals would not come back accurate. According to Health and Human Services Secretary, Mike Levitt, “nine out of ten experimental drugs fail in clinical studies because we can not accurately predict how they will behave in people based on laboratory and animal studies”.

My final proposal touches on the topic of awareness. If people are made aware of these issues they are less likely to commit these acts of cruelty. Throughout history, people were more aware of the issues within their society. For example, in 1866 the newspaper the New York Herald published a satire that was directed at Henery Bergh and is an animal protection association. This organization was called the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In today’s society, we continue to fight for these animals.

Nevertheless, there are individuals who feel as though animals need to be tamed. They see no need to give animals the same respect as a human; however, that is just not the case. Animals are brought into this world the same way we are, thus they deserve respect same as humans.

Ultimately, animal cruelty is a very serious issue considering how people neglect their animals or use them for testing. Therefore, we see that our only option to stop these heinous deeds from occurring would be to enact laws against animal cruelty and make people more aware. If people choose to stand by and do nothing this crime will continue to grow worse and worse by the decade. Acts such as these should not become a norm in our society and should not be encouraged in any way, shape, or form.
