Augustine’s pre theological life begun with a family with different views towards their own religion and faith. Augustine’s mother was said to be a devout Christian and his father a pagan, from where it is made obvious where Augustine adopted his faith from, his mother. Augustine was born as Aurelius Augustinus Hipponensis, in Hippo of North Africa. As a child, he centralized his faith around his mother, understanding and learning about Christianity whilst shunning out his father’s beliefs. He adopted a prospect of reading and philosophy, which lead to the start of Augustine’s strengthening of faith. Reading and writing was viewed as his specialty and he would later write some of the most notorious and none the less renowned pieces of literature and philosophy which is still being used in current age Christianity

For Augustine to gain faith that there is a god, he had to close his eyes and open his heart to allow for The Holy Spirit to be able to pass on a message to him. For one to convert, they must be open to an experience to revert their faith. Augustine’s experience begun when he opened his heart after studying various documents which described God as which allowed God to change him. A valuable lesson that Augustine passed on to humanity through his documents was that one must allow God to change them. Not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying, but put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill the lusts thereof (Hippo, 2008). Augustine’s teachings assist those who struggle to see a sign to open their hearts and allow their life to prosper under the supervision of the Lord our God. We must prepare to understand that putting Christ before what we want will allow us to receive what we need, rather than what we desire.
