The Statue Of Liberty: A Symbol Of Dreamed Land For The Immigrants

The Statue of Liberty was inspired in the Colossus of Rhodes. It is a scale of the original monument in Greece. Both statues are known worldwide as a symbol of freedom. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of America being the “dreamed land” for the immigrants. “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus makes a comparison between these monuments. This sonnet was the solution to raise money and have enough funds to set up the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal. It presents the Statue of Liberty as “New Colossus” to symbolize a better quality of life for immigrants rather than a symbol of Military power. The Statue of Liberty, situated in New York City symbolizes freedom and economic opportunities for immigrants, but there is a history of immigration; many immigrants were inventors, there is a process for citizenship, and laws since 2016 have changed.

There have been genius inventors in the world; one such person is Dr. Randal Pham. A Vietnamese-American doctor who is recognized for being the first surgeon of Vietnamese origin admitted into a distinguished medical society named “American Society of Ophthalmic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.” First, he has used for over 25 years, the most advanced and sophisticated techniques in order to provide to all his patients the best quality and safety. He has accomplished with procedures that use lasers thousands of successful plastic and reconstructive surgery, giving his patients and colleagues better appearances, and helping them with their vision. Furthermore, he invented the “AcrySof ReSTOR”, it is a multifocal intraocular lens for cataract eye surgery and it was approved by the FDA in March 2005. The AcrySof ReSTOR lens creates zones that bend light differently to provide correction over a wide range of viewing distances because it has a design that consists of concentric rings of very fire ridges. Doctors from all over the world that recognize the merit of Dr. Pham, say that the lens has an “apodized diffractive” design, Dr. Pham affirms that in order to create a more seamless optical system for seeing clearly at all distances, he smoothed the sharp discontinuities in the concentric rings. Finally, he has helped more than 150 patients to stop wearing glasses treating them with this method. This invention is perfect for all people with vision problems such as bad vision because of age, cataracts, or bad near-sighted and far-sighted vision. Not all people can be treated with the AcrySof Restor Lens, cases of kids under 18 years of age will need eye adjustment by Lasik before replacing with Dr. Randal Pham’s invention. Since inventors from other countries reside in the United States, the government issued laws that would allow these individuals to become American citizens.

Becoming a citizen of the United States (U.S.) is a very long-lasting process. To begin with, not just anyone can become a citizen of the United States. There are many requirements and responsibilities of becoming a citizen. It is a very special privilege, the people who do become citizens should feel very lucky and proud to be American citizens. In addition, one way of getting citizenship is through naturalization. This is the process in which a person not born in the United States that meets all the requirements voluntarily becomes an American citizen. This is the most common way to get citizenship for foreign-born persons. As a result, immigrants try to fulfill the requirements. Some of them qualify for service in the U.S. Armed Forces. Others stay 5 years as permanent residents, and the most common in my experience is that immigrants stay 3 years as permanent residents living in marital union with a U.S. citizen. While the United States has managed strict immigration laws in the past, immigration laws began changing in 2016.

The changes to the immigration laws have been more notable since Donald Trump became president. In the first place, there was a historic reduction in the number of refugees that the United States will accept. Trump administration lowered the ceiling down to 45,000 refugees. Compared to Obama’s 110,000 immigrants allowed, it has been reduced by more than 50% and it is expected to drop to 20,000 admissions for the whole of 2019. Also, President Trump issued an executive order titled “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States”. This restricted travel to the United States to individuals from six countries (Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen). It lasted 90 days, and a moratorium was placed on worldwide refugee admissions for 120 days. As well, the President’s administration made several changes that increased the vetting of potential immigrants and slow legal admissions. To fulfill campaign promises, Trump issued executive orders promising “enhanced vetting”. This would focus on preventing the entry of people deemed to be threats to public safety and on ensuring the foreign countries share information with U.S. officials about their nationals if they apply for entry into the United States.

To conclude, Individual and Society is the perfect theme if we consider the idea of how the United States was created and the relevance of immigrants as individuals in America’s society. Randal Pham is an example of this, he is a renowned Vietnamese surgeon. He has helped thousands of American citizens through his knowledge and discoveries performing successful surgeries. Immigrants as his family can become American citizens if they meet all requirements. The most common way immigrants become American citizens is by the naturalization process, but second generations and on can also obtain citizenship by being born in the United States. However, laws have been changing since 2016. President Donald Trump made modifications to immigrant laws in order to make this process more complicated. Finally, in the chapter Immigrant Contribution of the book A Nation of Immigrants, the author John F. Kennedy talks about the importance of immigrants, in this case scientists and inventors, to the country’s development, coexistence and success.
