Academic Challenges: Specific Student Problems And Ways Of Their Solution

This point considers the causes of specific student problems and how it can result in these problems.

Students, who want to start education, very often thinking, that it will be the best adventure in their life because they can meet lifelong friends and this is an opportunity to lern everything about things, that interest them, but sometimes Universities do not live up to our expectations.

There is plenty of reasons, which might not be enjoying the student lifestyle.

One of the reasons is, that students not enjoying the course, the cause these may be:

• parent’s pressure on the student, who suggest education straight after they finish College. Sometimes students do not now, what they want to study. It is a personal and very important decision which can affect future life. (Quinn 2014 ) have found that Sarah Micklewright, a former student in fine art at Messiah College, Pennsylvania, experienced the trouble this can cause: The common refrain in my house was, ‘If you don’t go now, you never will’.
• the subject of study. During education, you may not be totally interested in the modules at all
• boring knowledge transfer from teachers. If the lessons are not interesting and boring no one wants to participate on the course or any different activities.

How resolve this problem?

In the first place, students should speak with a Tutor or Lecture forget some advice. Another step is to give it time. For Example: When students starting a course the modules they are currently taking are not interset them, but after few weeks programme may change and there may be other modules available, which would be more interesting and enjoyable. If nothing is changing students should consider changing the course and consult it with a personal tutor or course leader.

Another point is a problem with accommodation.

Students have many ways to choose accommodation, some of them renting students building, another living with family or renting private houses, but the biggest problem with accommodation is:

• cost of renting. For instance, London is the most expensive place to study with average weekly rent of around £100 per week, what is more, every year the price is higher so not everyone can effort such expenses.
• not enough space for people in student house. Many cities provide less bed spaces, then students who study on full-time
• lack water/heating, damp
• noisy housemates and housemates stealing food.

To avoid this trouble the best way is renting a house with a group of friends from an Agency or a private landlord when cost are cheaper. In case of a problem in the home, a good idea is to contact with University, Legal Advice or Landlord.

Next problem is peer issues:

Many factors can influence this problem, especially when studying in a country where is a cultural mix. One of these troubles is a foreign student.

(Harris, McNamara 1997) Furnham and Tresize (1983) have suggested that problems facing the foreign student are threefold:

• the problem of living in a foreing culture (racial discrimination, language problem, accomodation difficulties, seperation reaction,dietary restriction,financial stress,loneliness, etc.)
• the problem of late-adolescent/young adults asserting their emotional and intellectual independence
• the academic problem associated with higher education study

Another factor may be:

• no adaptation
• change of learning system
• finding yourself in a new environment

The last one is a problem with struggling to engage with learning.

Students, who actively participate in lessons have more opportunities to understand, learn, remember and enjoy more, but is not the method to understand all. There are several reasons, why students may have problems with learning:

• not enough time for learning, for example, students have to work and have a family for which they have to spend valuable time
• language barrier- for example when someone studies in a non-native language and does not speak fluently, then need more time to translate and clearly understand everything.
• dyslexia- is one of the learning difficulties including writing, reading and spelling
• ack of regularity-when students do not repeat materials systematically, they may have a lack of knowledge in specific topics
