George Washington: Why Was He So Important In The Revolutionary War

Why was George Washington so important in the Revolutionary war? Some people think it was just the soldiers because they were the ones who actually did the fighting. But, without George, we wouldn’t even have those soldiers! George took a big role as being the commander and chief of the colonists during one of the longest wars in history. Little did he know he would soon become the first President.

Waking up at 5:30 am every morning not knowing when your enemies will attack is like you never know if your siblings will jump on you early in the morning. Before the war, George would manage a 500-acre property/ farm, Mount Vernon. With the many acres, George would have to hunt for his food so by the time he was 13, he was pretty familiar with the shooting which would be great later on. George may have owned a large property but also had to manage with his slaves. By the time George and his brother were 20, both of their parents have died from a disease called Measles, which at the time was incurable. But back in the day many people got sick, including the soldiers, and didn’t know what to do about it.

Losing soldiers during the war was a huge problem for the commander. When there are no more capable soldiers to fight and you just can’t lose this battle, now that is one very sticky situation. Well, what was George left to do? He called in the slaves! Over 12,500 fought on both sides. Without George’s decision of having the slaves fight, we would have most likely have lost. With the slaves on both sides, the battle must continue. All though the slaves were still mistreated, on top of all the stress of the soldiers, now George had to deal with King George III and his army [the Army]. Throughout the war, King George would make lots of unfair decisions like the Stamp and Sugar act.

The sugar act was where King George would put a tax on any sugar, tea, or molasses. The act became so important because it was the first act on the colonists. The would almost double the price of any sugar that the Colonists depended on for. At first, the colonists would think George would tie up to why were doing this but it turned out they just wanted some income and money. The act that took on April 5, 1765, quickly got taken down and was claimed unfairly. Which one thing lead to the next, came the stamp act.

The Stamp Act was passed by Parliament on March 22, 1765. The new tax was imposed on all American colonists and required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used. Ship’s papers, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, other publications, and even playing cards were taxed.

Everyone knows that with war comes battles, but did you know that the colonists actually had to claim land and build forts for protection? With the war came a lot of and claiming. Brittan claims almost ¾ of Massachusetts. Very quickly they claimed lots of lands which wasn’t such a good choice in the long run. With this many lands, they also claimed Boston which at the time was the most popular city in the Colonies. With lots of lands came then battles, and during the battle, George Washington built 16 revolutionary forts. Including Ticonderoga. Ticonderoga was one of the longest-lasting forts and still has a memorial to this day. Imagine every time you stepped foot in a different room in your house, you have to battle with someone who was already in there. George had to find a way with to stop taking his land. Without George Washington, we wouldn’t have had a strong army like how we did in the Revolutionary war. After the battle, George got elected by the people to be the first President of the United States! This big change happened for just being such a good commander which tells people they can do anything and be greatly rewarded.
