Introduction:

Vietnam’s roads are one of the most dangerous in the world, road accidents are a huge problem there killing 14,000 people each year. So, on average one person dies every hour on the roads in Vietnam. So, what are the government in Vietnam doing to help this massive issue. Well the Communist party in Vietnam lead by Nguyen Phu Trong announced that they are aiming to lower road fatalities to fewer than 20 a day or 7,300 per year in 2020. But what exactly is the government doing to make that vison a reality. Saying your aiming for lower death tolls is great and all but actions speak louder than words and at the moment all we really hear is words.

Argument 1:

Firstly, are the roads the problem here? Well what makes Vietnams roads dangerous? A huge chunk of the roads in Vietnam have had almost no conditioning for decades which leads to uneven surfaces unclear road rules painted on the road and bumpy roads which might be a reason for some of the accidents. Another interesting thing in Vietnam that caught my eye was that Traffic lights are very rare which leads to messy dangerous intersections were crashes often occur like these (show traffic jam photo). Therefore, as you could imagine crossing is a struggle and it doesn’t help the fact that breaking isn’t an action the Vietnamese consider. So, make sure you cross with care look right left everywhere.

Argument 2:

Motorbikes, there are 92 million people in Vietnam as of 2017 and there are 45 million registered motorbikes so for just about every 2 people in Vietnam there is one motorbike. You might ask yourself why there are so many motorbikes in Vietnam, well it is as simple as because there cheap. The average person in Vietnam doesn’t work in a job where they can afford to spend all their money on a car so if there is very little demand there will be little supply. But let’s say you’re not like the rest of Vietnam, your wealthy and are looking for a vehicle to get you around the city. Why would you want to buy a motorbike? Well imagine everyone around you is on a motorbike and you’re in a big SUV it would be hard to manoeuvre around and get to places quick but when you’re on a motorbike you fit through gaps you wouldn’t in a car, overtake people you wouldn’t in a car and you would get to places quick than you would in a car and that’s why the people in Vietnam choose motorbikes.

Argument 3:

Finally, it begs the question What exactly are the government doing to lower road accident tolls? The chief of the communist party in Vietnam Phu Trong has made an effort by conditioning the roads new highways to make them safer with more lanes for less congestion and strengthening and extending the barriers on both sides and middle of the highway as well as enforcing the don’t drink and drive policy by having more police men on watch and putting up more speed limit signs to reduce crashes.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, Vietnam is a country with a lot of problems and road accidents is a major one killing thousands of people.
