Proliferation Of Rape Culture In College Campuses

I decided to write my research paper on rape culture with an emphasis on rape culture and college campuses. But I am first defining how rape culture is typically limited. Rape Culture can be looked at as an atmosphere in which rape is accepted, and also sexual violence upon women is normalized and overlooked in the media and popular culture. Rape culture is continued by the use of misogynistic speech, the objectification of women’s bodies, and the glamorizing of sexual brutality, through forming a culture that dismisses women’s rights and security.

The general issue with rape culture affects every woman. Most women and girls restrict their behavior due to the existence of rape, especially on college campuses. While most women and girls exist in fear of the chance of being raped, it rarely crosses a man’s mind. This, in turn, is how rape acts as strong medians by which the whole female population is contained in a subservient standing to the entire male community, even though many men reportedly do not like the concept of rape, many women are still victims of rape.

Moving into a college campus must be an exciting time for recent high school graduates. College is filled with gatherings, revitalizing freedom away from parents, and having the opportunity of being within proximity to students of similar age. Nevertheless, each of these possibilities helps to promote a gendered environment. With the use of media applications such as Tinder and other online introduction applications, which features are responsible for strangers hooking up and why college settings are divided continuously and exploit women. Tinder is an application that helps strangers match with others based on a short biography and photo of people nearby. Tinder has become widespread among colleges and universities. Apps similar to Tinder is used among men to increase their sexual conquest numbers. After the encounter, the male partner begins to brag while the female partner is shammed. This incident is an example of a sexual dual-standard that currently subsists in culture but is usually apparent in our young and university community. Having different guidelines concerning sexual confrontations between males and females is mimicked even more when sexual assault cases include witnesses recording videos of the incident.

Gender inequalities can be seen in fraternity parties. There is a structure of party life at colleges that also creates a magnified gendered culture. Before, a girl walks through the front door that is automatically treated differently. Typically at parties, Men are charged for an entrance fee, whereas women are encouraged to enter free of charge. This is to ensure that women are not deterred from joining the party and encourages them to stay. Also, most parties do not charge women for drinks. When the drinks are free, the more women consume and the better of a chance the men have of taking advantage of them. The free entrance and drinks give men expectations of sexual courtesies. Because men have to pay the party entrance fee and alcohol, their expectations are higher. This type of intercommunication and sexual expectation among college males and females at parties constructs a gendered environment. The women are primarily seen as prey and the men as hunters. The party structure enhances rape culture by assuming that women who drink automatically want to have sex.

It is noted that one in four women will become a victim of sexual assault while attending college. That number is growing higher. Most people are worried about a strange raping them, when 9 out of 10 times, the rapist is someone the women know. Generally, the victim will not feel comfortable talking about the incident, and even if they are, it would be to a friend and not an actual officer.

School culture can throw off numerous adolescent men and women on what establishes sexual assault. First-year College students experience a transformation in their lives when leaving home for the first time. This unique encounter is defined living in coed dormitories, near-constant socializing that includes alcohol beverages typically. Universities, particularly more significant institutions, create an expectation of partying is a necessary step to receive all college has to offer. Cultural expectations that are partying and drinking help develop social bonds. Because young men and women want to create these bonds, they drink more than they can handle.
