In modern society, the demand for studying a foreign language has increased in the past two decades that several people move to a foreign nation to pursue higher education. Most college education in the United States are highly honored due to their great quality and the opportunities that they provide for their students. Therefore, international students are often feeling very excited and eager to achieve their bachelor’s degrees or master’s degrees. However, it is really difficult to adapt to challenges by the applicants, so they do not make any necessary preparations for them to achieve it. Challenges include cultural discrimination, loneliness hider, and language barrier that they are experiences during their stay.
One of the most challenges that most international students struggling with is grasping the unfamiliar of local cultural rules. This feature is deeper in the college environment where college students may not be apologetic about the culture that can be embarrassing or awkward. Therefore, the common between cultural differences and the unfamiliar of local lifestyles, the rules of politeness, and the behavior of social may make their daily activities to be more difficult. Although this feature can overcome through observations of what people are doing around them. Somehow, there are students who choose to get away from their social engagement with the fear of embarrassing and stubborn situations.
Most applicants usually have a great idea of the cultural feature of the country that they are applying for a college spot. Surprisingly, they are experiences the cultural shock that arrived is beyond their expectations. For example, the majority of students from Muslim countries are showing not belief in how Western people dress and expressed their intimacy in public. The major feature of cultural shock that can affect the life of international students is the interdependence-dependence separately. Besides, Western cultures are always staying great important on independence, while African cultures are always staying with interdependence (Newsome and Cooper 203). As such, students in Western schools are struggling to achieve their tasks like doing chores that are shared by their family members or their parents.
The language barrier is the most common barrier that all international students have to face in the situation of foreign learning. It is extremely difficult to communicate for those students that can speak a little of their native language and those students that are fluent but have a strong accent. When the fear comes, people always had trouble pronouncing a word wrongly or inappropriate of using a phrase. In an opposing way, it is more difficult to understand the local slang and analysis a word when they are not familiar with the environment around them. Additionally, many students come from countries where English is being taught as a second language through writing, so it is not a big challenge when they have to surround by English speakers (Hagey and Hagey 43). As a result, those students are familiar with the grammar, but they are lacking in communication with each other. The inability of having verbal English accurately considerably influence both the social and academic accomplishment of international students living in a foreign nation.
Many international students are not expected when moving to a foreign country for better education such as America. During that moment, they start to experience feelings of distress in response to racism. Even though school has a policy for discrimination, foreign students are discriminated against by their religion, color, and ethnicity. According to Cole and Ahmed shows that female Mulism international students who wear Hijab are usually being in a dangerous fanatical with the intentions of terrorists (2003). The study shows that there is about 21 percent of foreign students have reported being discriminated against experiences when attracted to their professors (Hanassab 9). As a result, there are many cases that being ignored, biased, and not even trying to say their names accurately.
In contrast, with a little speaking English, foreign students always find it difficult to participate in classes; instructions and methods are highly considered at school. Therefore, language skills are the most serious problem that international students need to deal with it. The problem restricts them from taking notes, oral presentations, write reports and finish their exam at the same time as other native students. These obstacles are also limiting them from other basic life experiences such as using phone services, credit card companies, and order food from the restaurant.
Overall, most international students are staying away from home for hundreds of miles without receiving any support from the family. Therefore, international students experience loneliness when they have to face many different obstacles in their lives, and sometimes all they need and support from their friends and family. However, there are many international students who overcome the obstacles after living abroad for a few months. The study shows that about 200 foreign students are experiencing loneliness and isolate themselves for a few months studying in various schools in Australia, which causes them to be more engaged and feel comfortable with the environment around them (Sawyer, Marginson and Deumert 7).
